Seeing Dark Arisen on sale. I've never reaaaaly seen much of it and have only heard secondhand. Is it like a big open world, or a more focused experience?

Most definitely a great game and worth a purchase. Its open world after the introductory segments.

Main things to watch out for is the relationship levels (it can be awkward at certain points as that can play a role in certain things.) and the possibility of losing quests if you advance too far into the main story

I hope Itsuno really is working on a sequel right now and the game just becomes flat out mainstream when the announcement drops

I need clarificatiom on the open world status.

I really hate those.

Every second of any video game where you are just walking around in a world and not actively engaged is bad, so I need to know how much walking around there is.

I realize this sounds petty and and overexaggerated, but it's a real big deal to me!

it's pretty good. plot is generic fantasy fare for the most part, but it gets pretty fuckin wild at the end. the combat and sense of adventuring are fantastic so that should carry you through the game.

I literally gave up on the game after about 10 hours because the only way to fast travel is these stones they give you and they weren't easy to come by in the early game. All the enemies on the world map also reset when you go into a town and the first few quests felt like they were just fetch quests between the first two towns.

Some of the combat was actually tough so I was really disappointed to leave the town and see the exact same encounter in the exact same spot on the world map. Maybe it gets better and the combat was fun but wow those opening hours did NOT grab me.

In layman's terms, Skyrim is the worst game I've played.

I am not capable of enjoying an RPG with a large open world, so I need to know how much time this game will expect. Me to devote to just walking from Point A to Point B.

it's an okay game. as someone who got bored with all of the walking around I can say you probably won't like it either. it's a shame because a lot of the other stuff about it is good. the cutscenes are also pretty clunky and awkward though and there characters all feel pretty... weird. hard to explain. they put an emphasis on making every person an actual unique NPC but this makes the majority of the cast feel shallow because nobody stands out. and even the few NPCs who should be important have very few lines and don't do very much.

the optional dungeon added with the Dark Arisen DLC was actually really awesome. at least for as much as I played of it. I kept hitting a wall because the difficulty level of that area was very high and I didn't feel motivated to grind through the main game just to keep progressing through the one dungeon I found legitimately fun.

A merely above average game with clunky combat and some poorly implemented gameplay mechanics.

Dark Arisen does fix some of the issues that the original has though.

You will see that the world is very small once you've played through the game so it isn't fair to compare this to Skyrim.
