You can play online against random people, but you cannot play online against people on your friendlist, because it will allow for potential leaderboard warping. You can still play with friends IRL though...

To be fair Mario Maker was a game that they patched often and addressed fan complaints. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they added it in a future update.

To be fair in my case, I had no interest in the game until I saw the direct, and the multiplayer is what hyped me. A lot of Discords were setting up plans for multiplayer stuff. Then we got a big Nope.

My main gripe with the multiplayer is that winning is apparently only based on finishing first. In NSMBW (and I havent played NSMBU but I assume there too) the goal was to collect the most coins, and you got a bonus for finishing first/higher on the flagpole. In this game you could die right away, stay in a bubble until right before the end, and just hit the flagpole first and win. Thats dumb. Ive also already read accounts from press who got to play that in stages where the goal is blanked out until an objective is accomplished, you can just camp out at the goal and let everyone else get everything and then finish first

The video footage of the mode showed a sparkly checkpoint-like system that dead players respawn from. If there's bubbles, they're probably in the co-op multiplayer mode.
