honestly I don't think youtube auto ads funding a channel are a particularly good or sustainable source of income anyway. My impression was that most of the people who actually make a living off youtube videos do it with sponsorship deals for other companies, not the ad revenue itself

The internet learned this the hard way, in 1999, and again soon.

Also, I have no Netflix, Hulu, nothing. No cable, no antenna, nothing. Also don't own a pc.

All I have is my phone, so YouTube is about all I have.

I don't like watching people play video games so twitch is a no go.

Hulu is like $5/month

and its still garbage. My buddy had it, and was always complaining that they had ads still running despite him paying 5/m. And its not like 1 or 2 ads, sometimes we went through 2 full minutes of ads one after another, then 15 mins of content for another few ads, on a paid service. If you want the ad-free service its like 12/m, definitely not worth it.

Compared to Netflix which is cheaper, or even just learning how to watch stuff online yourself.

Game Grumps seems to have given up on playing more than two games at a time now (so fuck you if you dont wanna watch Zelda or Ace Attorney, I guess).

Omg, this so much. I haven't watched a GG video in a long time.

On the other hand, they tackle other games via streams which actually makes them loads of money. They stop like every half hour to read an extensive list of donations.

Of course, watching streams or VODs of them requires having a lot of free time in the first place instead of watching 15 minutes a day, so...

What do you guys think?

I think you're wrong since every single YouTuber these days seems to be going "Hey go to givememoneyyoudumbsucker.screwyou and sub to my patreon!" The way monitization has been for a long while, a lot of them have been moving to having sponsors or patreon, this isn't really going to affect that much

TLDR, TC is wrong and this has been in effect since February 2018, no one noticed because it didn't matter.

It's 1000, not a million.

This, it's 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time in the past 12 months. One million in order to get monetized is way too much and will never happen.

Also this 1000 subs rule came into effect in February of 2018, so your a bit late to the doomsday conversation (nothing actually happened either, people with less than 1000 subs were getting paid pennies anyway).

It's 1000, not a million. It's a higher barrier of entry, but not as extreme as you've mistaken it to be.

Also the amount of money you're going to get for views on videos for under 1000 subs is probably going to be literal couple dollars anyway.

And if you get 1000 people to watch a ten minute video, you're already closing in on two hundred hours.

So it's really nothing that grueling.

yeah 1000 wasn't even a high barrier entry
if you cannot get 1000 subs, how do you expect to get any money?

Well, Youtube is still going a year and 5 months after this story broke (with the correct number, 1000 subs, not 1 million), so nope.
