I remember they were the hipsters of the early 2000's. Did they all just grow beards and start wearing flannel?

Maybe they got tired of being called gay and watered themselves down in order to be "acceptable" again.

Kind of. There was definitely a culture shift away from ironic nihilism towards super sincere rustic Americana in the mid-2000s (think Bon Iver, Iron and wine, and Fleet Foxes). Both occupied a kind of countercultural headspace in response to something. By the end of the decade the plunderphonic movements of vaporwave and ironic consumerism had come into their own mainstream (see: Ariel Pink) consciousness manifesting as artists borrowing old pop cultural A E S T H E T I C S, experimenting with intentionally low fidelity audio production, remixing old pop songs with different production styles, or straight up digging up old classics. This is why Takeuchi's Plastic Love is in all of our YouTube recommendations. It also directly informs Carly Rae Jepsen's work since 2015 (btw listen to Dedication).
