After much controversy, the Bakersfield, Calif., City Council on Wednesday approved a proposal to add In God We Trust decals to both police and fire vehicles.

I love the motto, said Councilmember Jacquie Sullivan, according to The Bakersfield Californian. Its meaningful. Its powerful. Those words are intended to encourage.

Sullivans non-profit organization, In God We Trust America, has offered to pay for the decals.

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who represents Bakersfield, had said he fully supported the decals.

Displaying In God We Trust the official motto of the United States on Bakersfield Police Department cars is a testament to each officers commitment to upholding the rule of law and defending the City of Bakersfield and its residents, he said in a statement to The Californian

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union showed up at the city council meeting to oppose the proposal, calling it bad public policy.

Unlike God, police officers are fallible, ACLU lawyer Jordan Wells said. Their conduct should be scrutinized by the public, and when they overstep their authority, we must insist on accountability.

One council member, Andrae Gonzales, said he is Christian but voted against the decals.

The God I believe in is much bigger than a bumper sticker, he said.

City council members in nearby Delano approved a proposal last month to add In God We Trust to police vehicles. The city of Shafter, which borders Bakersfield, is expected to vote on a similar proposal later this month.

I don't think religion should be on government vehicles.

And think of all the people that time and money could help. If you're really Christian and really believe in God, surely like giving a family some food or filling a pothole means more than breaking the 3rd commandment and pissing on the idea of seperation of church and state

I guess the Gods these fellas believe in doesn't care about humans and is a bit of an asshat

Allah is just a generic Arabic word meaning god used by every Arabic person regardless of which faith they follow. Americans generally speak English, so God is the correct word to use here. Jews call God "Adonai" or "Elohim" in the Hebrew language, but you don't usually hear them say it or see them write it when speaking of God in English.

"bigger issues exist" is not a defense of anything.

It's a very lazy intellectually dishonest evasion.

Imagine going to a police station and saying "My car was just stolen" and they go "Pfft this is literally non news. If you get upset about this, you have bigger issues."

This is a bad thing and one worth talking about. I think you know that too which is why you're so afraid to talk about it, because you like it but can't actually defend it

You intentionally just dodged my point.

If "In Allah we trust" was proposed to be put on police cars, no one would go "Well Allah just means God" people (and mainly the same people who want In "God We trust" put on) would be livid.

You're being intellectually dishonest when you pretend otherwise. Vocal Christians in America are not okay with spreading the Islamic faith, let alone the government spreading Islamic faith.

This evidenced everytime schools do work or homework that involves reading te Qu'ran and people flip out

To be fair, I'm sure there would be at least a few people who would understand that and go "Well Allah just means God," but your point still stands that it would likely be vandalized pretty quickly.

Being a police vehicle, though, I'd imagine most people who would have a problem with it would just lose their shit without vandalizing it, but you never really know.

Even ignoring the vandalizing, my point is people would be against it.

Going "Well Jews and Muslims exist too" when there are only 8 million jews and muslims in the US but 300 million Christians, a lot of whom would hate promoting Islam.. is a lazy counter-point to this.

It's bad for the line between church and state to be blured. It's a waste of time and money to put it on governent vehicles and it sends totally the wrong message for society.

"We trust in things without proof" is the last thing you want the people in charge of judging whether or not you get arrested or your home burns down to display proudly. And it's alarming if a lot of religious people don't agree.

In private? Sure

On government vehicles? No. It is an endorsement of religion.

As repeatedly earlier, people would be enraged if it said "allah" instead of god. If that were the case no one would be denying that it's an endorsement.

I'm assuming you mean endorsement BTW because establishment makes no sense that context
