Okay honestly Zestiria isn't THAT bad. I mean the plot is a little forgettable but I don't see why people treat Berseria like it's 10/10 and Zestiria 0/10 when they're both hovering around 7/10 or 8/10. I actually liked the combat in Zestiria better than Berseria!

Also the combat is broken and the camera is dreadful.

It has basically nothing going for it other than Alisha, a couple good scenes, and the OST.

In no way is it even REMOTELY comparable to Berseria. Those games sit on the exact opposite end of the Tales spectrum.

Zestiria is pretty darn bad IMO. The mechanics are an unbalanced, convoluted, poorly thought out mess that result in the one game in the series not worth learning at any kind of deep level IMO. I play all of these games at the highest difficulty though and Zestiria's flaws really stick out on Chaos.

On lower levels the flow is admittedly totally fine since the armatization stat calculation disaster isn't present, but you've still got the issue of the skill system being utterly random and largely impossible to meaningfully influence until the end of the game. Which even then I might be able to forgive if they didn't have shitloads of skits and tutorials trying to pretend you have any control over the system before you've maxed out all your Lord of the Land stuff.

That's all just my opinion, of course!

Berseria has a handful of issues at the end but Zesteria's is literally the result of them changing the entire games story at the result of last minute changes, and it shows in how everything about the presentation just collapses. The final 3 major plot thread wrapups being tested like a sidequest to old areas with absolutely no fanfare is the cherry on top. The game is a mess.

I would go on, but I already did like 7k word of confused rage in my playthrough topic when everything started falling apart.

zestiria's not a 0/10 game... it's more like a 5/10. I honestly can't go into detail about the last third because I'm pretty sure I abandoned it halfway through.

I would say that berseria absolutely "sticks the landing" as far as how it develops the party members, particularly magilou, rokurou and eizen. there's definitely a debate re: velvet and laphi, but I remember it being fairly well done (particularly for a tales game).

but whatever. everyone's entitled to their tastes. berseria's not perfect either tbh. I think it gets a lot of attention from fans because of how unexpectedly good it was. Now that there are expectations again, I firmly expect the Tales series to disappoint, lol

If you didn't make it to the last 3rd and thought that was a 5/10, you'd probably out it at a 2.

I was at a 7/10 up till then, and now I'm at a 4.

Amd yeah, any issues I have with Berseria are not in the cast. There's some story issues, but the party itself is the best in class in the genre.

Zestiria is a perfectly average game, which makes it a bottom tier Tales game because most entries in the series are good at minimum.

It has all the issues Vesperia does with none of the good aspects to make up for it.

Looks fantastic! Gameplay looks like it might be a more free/open ARPG style wrapped around all the classic Tales mechanics. Very hard to tell. Visuals look, erm, unreal, if you'll forgive the pun!

It just screams "let's just play random voice clips as the character moves around instead of skits"

Battle camera probably isn't actually zoomed in that far. Early Berseria footage was also like that. It's probably just to be cinematic.

Gotta say I'm legit in love with the designs we're seeing so far! Character design and overall art design is being handled by Iwamoto, character designer of Eizen, Laphicet and Zaveid. Having all characters and art handled by a single person is a series first!

The game's director is Yoshito Higuchi, director of Symphonia and Abyss - returned from whatever void he vanished into for the last 10 years. The composer is being kept a secret, which seems to imply it's not Sakuraba! Tons to be excited about with this game, they're putting a ton of talent, time and, by the first trailer, effort into this one to try to make it a fresh start for the series. I can't wait!
