Yeah in many ways Tales development actually skipped the entire current generation. People shocked at the graphical leap don't grasp just how crumbly of an engine the games have been built on recently.

We'll likely know on Sunday but if I had to bet then I'd place it either in Summer or Fall 2020. PS5 who knows but it'll probably be less than a year from the Xbox dropping, I'd wager.

Vesperia is probably the safest option because it's stand-alone and a solid title. Personally, I think Berseria would be the best choice because although it's a prequel to Zestiria I don't think it's at all required to enjoy Berseria.

Beyond that you have to either takes some risks or make some trade-offs, IMO. Tales of the Abyss may well be my favorite in the series (it, Berseria, and Xillia 2 are my Top 3 and all very close) but it's a very polarizing title, a lot of people just straight-up dislike it. Tales of Graces f is a ton of fun gameplay-wise but its story/characters are generally held to be weaker. Tales of Xillia 2 is excellent IMO but some have issues with some of its mechanics and well, it's also a direct sequel so you'd want to play Xillia first really.

You really can't go wrong with a mainline title as an entry point as long as it's not Legendia of Zesteria, both of which shouldn't be played period. Vesperia and Abyss are usually what I recommend starting with. It can be hard to go back to some of the older titles after playing some of the newer ones even if story and character wise they are better (Abyss is my fav, but mechanically it's dated), so I personally like saying to start with Vesperia or Abyss, and follow up with Berseria or Grace's f. Xillia is often considered a real safe one because it's...super straightforward? Nobodies favorite, but nobody thinks it's bad either. It's easier than most, and shorter than most. I personally think it's forgettable, but it would hard to deny it's beginner friendliness.

I think its a good one to start with

The battle system in Phantasia is super obnoxious with the way the time stops when spells get cast. But yeah I do really like the 2D Sprite-based tales and it's a shame they moved completely away from them.

Eternia is definitely the best 2D-style Tales game with an English translation and the only one I'd really reccomend. But also so many of them are Japan-only.

I'm sincerely hoping we get something that's actually either in a wildly new direction here. I think of modern Tales games like this:

Classic style: Symphonia -> Abyss -> Vesperia, with Vesperia reaching perfection within that style

Middle-ground: Xillia -> Xillia 2, with Xillia 2 perfecting it

Artes style: Graces -> Zestiria -> Berseria, with Berseria perfecting it

Thinking on it that way I think they're perfectly poised to jump headlong into a new style, though I'm honestly not sure what that would look like. Main character seems to be able to switch between a normal and magical sword based on these early screens so who knows what that's going to imply!
