This especially applies to JRPGs where you definitely have canonical names. Cloud, Crono, Nutlicker, all iconic names of JRPG characters over the years and yet it's possible to never actually see the characters real names in game.

I usually name them after people I know, like friends n whatnot

I'm starting a Final Fantasy 7 play through with all Lethal Weapon character names.

Cloud is Riggs
Barrett is Murtaugh
Aeris is Victoria Lynn
Tifa is Lorna
Red XIII is Sam

I'm having more fun as a result.

I went for the canon (at the time) name in Persona 5 and named Joker Akira Kurusu.

I nane pokemon but otherwise I name them what they're Canonnoncxdhkkl

I don't really play JRPGS so the characters don't tend to have canonical names.

I'll always go with the canon name. Unless you can customize your character. Then I'll try my best to make them look like a character from another game that I like and name them appropriately :D

When I play FF7 remake I'm gong to name Cloud after my FF11 avatar, Xsephirothx

Canon names, but I change stuff like "Dagger" back to "Garnet."

Only game I've played where there was a canonical name was LoZ, and I always use Link/Epona until my second playthrough and I choose something obscene.
