Why would he say "Luke I am your father" when he is refuting a statement made by Luke. "Luke I am your father" would only make sense if he said it out of nowhere, which doesn't make sense to begin with.

It is pretty weird how seemingly 80% of people who've seen the movie adhere to a misquote that sounds considerably dumber than the actual line.

The conversation is (maybe not exact)

"Obi-Wan never told you about your father"

"He told me enough. He told me you killed him."

"No, I am your father."

-

Why would he say "Luke I am your father" there?

The actual line is "no, I am your father". The common misquote is "Luke, I am your father".

It's from people quoting the movie in other movies and TV shows. By adding Luke, you get that it's directly referencing Star Wars. It wouldn't make sense to have a goof-off speaking into a fan, "No, I am your father." Like, what? Is he telling the fan he's the fan's father? By adding the name drop, we know it's referencing something even if you're the only person who's never seen Star Wars.

It also keeps them from any copyright problems which might come from directly lifting the line. Luke is a common name, so they could always defend that they're talking about someone else who just happens to be named Luke.

It's like Wizard of Oz. A character says "fly, my pretties" or "I have a strange feeling we're not in Kansas," and you know they're referencing Wizard of Oz even though neither line was spoken.

yea i think this is some of the problem. this and most people just never really seeing the original movie or not seeing it in decades and just going with the common misconception.

i think people only quote it as "Luke" because that makes it much clearer what reference you are making if said without any other context

Rotten Tomatoes actually lists that as the quote. Or, rather, one of like three versions of that quote.

I've thought about the logistics of this. This is just my theory, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate. Basically, the movie came out and the line was "No, I am your father". Then, when people started referencing it they added "Luke" to the phrase, whether consciously or unconsciously, to show that the phrase was a reference to the new Star Wars movie that the line was from.

It's not really "mandela effect". It's just more people recognize the line as a reference to Star Wars than they recognize it as a line from Star Wars.

It makes sense that people misquote it--

out of context, saying "no, I am your father" doesn't make sense since the "no" implies there was something he is denying. Without the context, I can see why people would leave out the "no"

As a sub point, it's also weird how people think the emphasis lies on "am". As we can hear in the clip above, it's not "I am your father", it's "I am your father".
