It is (willful) ignorance, but what many people fail to realize is that it being ignorant does not mean racists still aren't detestable piles of human garbage

some basic biology like how one race and their genetic make ups don't make anyone superior than the other.

some basic physiological difference made some difference, especially in some aspects of physical ability and adaptability in certain environment (like african obviously do better thriving in hotter climate due to melanin in their skin, and vice versa) but these are just evolution, natural selection. (again, evolution works with the environment, with mutation and selection, shaping a creature to be able to survive and mate in their respective information. if you take a fish to land and it dies, do you say fish is inferior, than say a rat? if you take a rat into water and it drowns, do you say a rat is inferior to fish? )

in the term of a more complex attributes we usually assign to human being as their "scores" like intelligence, temperament, etc are governed by so many complex things, and the variation between races are thin. there are alot of both stupid and smart people in any race. alot of factor goes into this matters, enviroment, nutrition, general culture you live in. et cetera.

like seriously, in term of genetic variation, there are more variation within a single race than between race (at least within our current perception of "race" based on skin color and geography)

most of racist claims are based on utterly flawed ( i can understand how it began, due to lack of understanding of history, evolution, and genetics in general and as far as we go, basic physical features like skin colors are the most apparent, thus people jumping into conclusion and start correlating those to other aspect like intelligence, or even more abstract traits like the capability of material success or academic success), or downright malicious understanding of science and the historic course of human evolution. the more you learn about these stuff, the less you think skin color and slight difference in physiology amount to something as complex as intelligence.

some have claimed that racism is a result of mental illness. I also hear that toxic environments have huge effects on mental health. kind of like people who were nerds but get locked up over some silly shit, then they come back home wired differently. institutionalized.

I'm no expert, so I couldn't confirm or deny. but I do see that there is compelling evidence that appear to support the claim. repeated expression of incoherent, irrational thoughts and beliefs that have been disproven and even contradicted seems like a sign of something being off.

but that's also a conversation I'm not sure we can have without somebody(a mod) misconstruing the message and making it look like a general attack on mental illness or something.

Racists use the same logical sequencing as antivax, or really, any conspiracy nut. Science has long verified that stuff as bullshit, but what do they do? Just say anything that says otherwise is a conspiracy and must be "Big X" trying to keep the sheeple down, but hey, THESE documents from a 1940s propaganda campaign must be true.

Another popular tactic is to take real scientific reports, and then push that they come to racist conclusions, which is never actually the case. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the Minnesota transracial adoption study pushed as proof that races were inherently different in intellect, when the researchers who published the paper came to the opposite conclusion.

Racists are dumbasses.
