X would be the safest bet for a new player imo.

Other than that, you cant go wrong with 6, 7, or 9 either.

If youve never played Chrono Trigger throw that in there too.

Final Fnatasy XIII is the most beloved game in the series. It was so popular that Square Enix made two direct sequels to it. The story is amazing and complex, the characters are well developed and likable, and the battle system was revolutionary. Youre going to love it, TC

The landmarks imo are FF4, 6, and 9

If you've never played jrpgs before I recommend 4 since it's the most straight forward (PSP version not the DS/PC version)

He's lying start with 7

9 is great but 7 is the best

7 was the first 3d one and there's a lot of nostalgia attached, but spiky blond with big sword hasn't aged well.

FF9 is the creator's favorite game, and the composer's favorite soundtrack, and also the best game.

Stop trolling, fam. Everyone knows that FF XIII is the best game of all time, fam. Those sales figures were probably distorted by Russian hackers

My vote is IX. Like someone else said, it's the creator's favorite. It has a unique art style that helped it age better IMO. The battle system is a little slow, but if it's your first turn based, it might not come off as jarring. Plus the remasters have options to speed things up.

I actually feel like the "How we got here" strategy is better for FF. Pick one or two of the good popular ones like 4, 6, 7 or 9 then go back and start at 1.

I don't feel like the really early games really do a good job of hooking the player, which is a shame because they're all worth playing. Of you start off in 1, I mean, it's not 1990 anymore. You probably got it for less than ten bucks and you probably have dozens of other games to get around to, so when the game literally railroads you to the king and plops you out into a generic world to go fight a generic bad guy and save a generic princess, if you don't already know it's a quality series, it might be hard to stick with it.

As someone who personally loves FFXIII, I can confirm that GOATSLAYER is being sarcastic. Even if he does accidentally make some good points in his attempts to be over the top.

IMO 6, 7, and 10 are the best entry points to the series. 9 is an excellent FF game but I hesitate to recommend it to a newcomer since the game is strong on nostalgia/references back to earlier games in the series.

If youre picking between those:

7s traits:
-High tech world contrasted with intrusion on natural settings
-themes include environmentalism, terrorism, identity, corporate governance
-Customizable character abilities, theyre mostly blank slates and you set up their magic and innate skills

9s traits:
-medieval, fairytale storybook-esq world
-themes include existentialism, depression, overall lots of tragedy and bloodshed contrasting its cartoonish look
-set classes for each character with little customization besides choosing a set of innate skills

I consider V through X to be the most consistent representation of the quality and content of the series. You could probably pick any of those and, if enjoyed, safely play the rest. They have their own strengths and weakness, and have aged poorly to varying degrees. I would need more info about what games you like before narrowing it down further.

My personal recommendation would probably be 7, 9, or 10. The most representative of the series is probably 9, and would be a good point to go either forward or backward depending on your preference. But 7 is a very solid entry, with a pretty engaging story and intuitive combat. Materia is also a very fun system.
