Started Ratchet & Clank 2 and I can help but feel like it's significantly harder than the first one and it got me thinking about how some games do this and some don't. Do you guys have a preference on the starting difficulty of sequels compared to the original?

Depends. I think it's terrible design for getting people to buy the game, but can be a love letter to dedicated fans

I kind of hate it but if I eventually get the hang of it it can be satisfying

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Majora's Mask and Metroid Prime 2 do this and it's great

Is it? I mean, it practically switched genres. I found dealing with the type of enemies R&C1 throws at you without third-person shooter controls to be pretty brutal at times. An example that speaks to me more is DMC3, which, yeah, I think it's fine there.

ratchet and clank gets easier as a series as it goes on, for the most part due to the increased focus on rpg elements meaning more health and such combined with less emphasis on platforming and such. also more qol features I guess.

the first one was definitely the hardest.

The genre change is likely what I find difficult. I ran in expecting to play it like 1 and promptly have been getting my ass kicked, but it looks like weapon variety and strategy is helping a lot.

I don't mind the difficulty dropping back a bit, but mandatory tutorials piss me off even more than usual when they're very slowly explaining mechanics that are exactly the same as the game I just finished.

Just have an option at the beginning of the game asking if you've beaten the previous entry and adjust the difficulty accordingly

Depends.

Like...Japan's Super Mario 2 (Lost Levels) is not actually a good game. It takes stuff like the maze in the first Super Mario Bros and cranks it so far up that you'll probably run out of time and die trying to guess the route.
