If I wanted to play all of the 8-bit Sonic games (Master System and Game Gear) on a home console, what are the minimum collections I'd need to have everything?

I know Sonic Adventure DX has a bunch of them, and there are a few other compilations. Trying to avoid overlap where I can though.

If you get Sonic Mega Collection Plus that basically covers all the core games

You'd have to unlock some things though

Sonic Gems Collection has Sonic CD and Sonic 2 for GameGear. It depends on how deep you're willing to go in on the franchise.

Everything else is basically covered in those two games. I'm not sure how much Gems Collection is going for but a PS2 copy of Mega Collection is like $6 on average.

Nah, they had all the Game Gear games in SA1 (GCN only) and then put half of them in Mega Collection Plus (but not the GCN version) and the other half in Gems Collection (only on GCN).

The Gamecube version of SADX has all the 8-bit games, but you have to 100% the game to unlock all of them. That's annoying enough that I'd advise getting Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection instead if you can.

Yeah, came in to edit my post to mention the unlock requirements. And they took them out of later SA1 releases entirely.

As a really big Sonic fan, the only one that's worth playing is Tails Adventures. But if you wanted to try them anyway, SADX is the best way to go.

There are only 12 GG/MS Sonic games. You can unlock them all in the GC port of SADX with a lot of time and effort, (new game unlocks every 10 emblems, bonus Metal Sonic skin for Sonic at 130) or you can get Mega Collection (S1, Chaos, Blast, Labyrinth, Drift, Mean Bean Machine) and Gems (S2, Spinball, Triple Trouble, Drift 2, Tails Skypatrol, Tails' Adventure) with everything available right off.

Gems definitely has the better set, with S2, Triple Trouble, and Tails' Adventure as my personal highlights.
