It's like yeah, the nets, we know. But it's not exactly a bad thing to reduce unnecessary plastic elsewhere. That's the whole point behind the plastic straw ban. They're really non-essential and we can totally do without them.

It's just really odd that someone would pick a specific type of marine animal plastic pollution to champion over another.

But it's not like it's one or the other. You can tackle the small stuff with no hindering of your goals on the big stuff.

Plus one of them is significantly easier to implement and the other requires international intervention, a complete ideological shift in the minds of a staunchly traditionalist culture, and a change in economic practices in a region of fierce developmental competition. Imagine telling a Western country during the industrial revolution that they should stop burning coal.

Well it's true. Banning plastic straws is insignificant in regards to ocean pollution from other countries. But it makes people feel good because they think they are doing their part without having to really sacrifice anything of actual value or put forward any actual effort.

People saw that video of the turtle with the straw up it's nose and assumed turtles all over the world were getting straws up their nose.

Pretty good viral activism I gotta say.

So your solution is force the disabled to have an extra burden and pack stuff they might need, all over something that able bodied persons will not be affected by?

Not all disabled people can use those reusable ones. Metal ones can heat or cool from whatever they're in and that can harm some people, plus they have to be washed before and after use. There's some plastic ones that can be reused but those tend to be rigid and people with limited mobility, especially in the neck, can't use them. Plus the rigidness of both can be a problem for certain people. And again, have to wash them out before and after use.

I would have no problem if they just said that the military is a large contributor. I found a source that claims that if they were a country they would be 55th on the global scale.

What I take issue with is the idea that you can deeply care about something like climate change right up until the moment that it requires posting accurate or factual information, at which point "that's just too much work I'll make something up."

Like, the reason we have all these climate change deniers is because people are told they're being lied to, and then they get into arguments with others who say or post EASILY disproven wrong information and it reinforces that initial belief that they are in fact being lied to.

Know what's even more painful? Waking up, walking over to the toilet, sitting down, going bathroom, getting up, and having your phone slide off of the ledge you placed it on, it bounces on to the toilet seat, then slides right in.
