Black civilizations as a whole are entirely glossed over by entertainment industries of all different stripes. People go on about the locales used in whatever piece of shit Ubisoft puts out with Assassin's Creed. Greece, France, England, Rome, etc. Nobody even mentions great African civilizations like Nubia or Detroit and it's fucking bullshit.

Tbf games that try to use Africa as a setting often get called out as racist, so I can understand if devs want to just avoid it altogether.

Right, I get that. But I'm saying like, if you just don't even try period, there's no danger of being called racist, so it makes sense why devs wanna take the easy route.

For the most part no, but I do remember some outlet called it 'the most racist thing ever in media' or something along those lines.

Almost never have a game set in African. Then you have one, people are running around in grass skirts waiting for a white guy to save them... yeah. That is just the same thing as being upset that game is set in Africa.

they could make a game taking place in nubia or aksum or the mali/songhai empire

there were other sub saharan african civilizations but there's not a lot known about them in general and so it would get to the point where the game makers would be literally making shit up to the point where it's a total fantasy. for example, a game taking place in great zimbabwe

I came into this topic expecting to post about the difficulties of even representing a Caribbean culture in a game let alone an African one, i.e. 'woke' white guys complaining about Cyberpunk 2077 and the creator as a black man telling them to STFU, but the Detroit bit just killed the topic.
