I dont get it. Ive tried listening to a few of them and its boring for me even if the person hosting the podcast is someone who I like for their stand up comedy or tv shows. How can people sit through podcasts for over an hour? I just fell like Id rather watch YouTube or a movie or something. Its not a fulfilling form of entertainment imo

You just don't like them. Its ok. I listen to geek history lesson pretty often because they dive deep into the history of a specific character. Publications and important arcs. Its pretty informative.

Similar appeal as radio? And they're great for like, traveling, commuting, when you're doing housework, etc

Time I would have been spaced out is instead filled with up to date news on topics I care about.

I can't use them as background noise. If they're talking about something I'm interested in then they have my attention. Same reason I can't fall asleep watching tv.

They update me on things that interests me while I'm doing other things. I think of them like audiobooks. If I want a deep dive on a particular topic, podcast. If I want to binge the Adventure Zone or Critical Roll, podcast. If I'm looking for a quick (or super thorough) recap of the news or that weeks internet drama, podcast. Need a close reading literary analysis of culturally significant music, you know what's up?

For me I enjoy how you get to have a group of people being real and having authentic conversations as opposed to being on a structured program where you also have to filter yourself due to the people you work for (like say a network) inhibiting full freedom. Obviously not every podcast is the same so you have to seek ones that are tailored to your interests and preferences. I think JRE is solid and covers a wide variety of topics because of the wide variety of awesome guests he has. Maybe you should look into podcasts that are suited towards a specific interest?
Also, I commute almost 2 hours 5 days a week and that's the only time I listen. I would expect most people to also be listening to podcasts during these sort of activities: commuting, working, exercising, etc where you can multi task as opposed to "I'm bored and it's a Saturday afternoon guess I'll throw on a 2 hour podcast and sit there and listen". --- "romance or action does not matter, hurting your friends will make you sadder..." ... The ones I listen to're roundtable discussions based on topics I'm innerested in. They don't "replace" music or anything, they're just something else ta listen to durin' commutes or slow shifts at work
