Most games have pretty lame counterattacks... usually it's just, ehhh, I'll hit again.

I think the best well known one is the bogstandard Counter/Mirror Coat from Pokemon, as they're not only counters, but double the damage too...

Ya, that's about as good as they get...

So is there better?

EDIT: And all of them are visually unappealing, too.

Disgaea has a few ok ones that I can think of.

One where if you get hit, you counter attack for double.

Another where you always dodge normal hits then counter.

And yet another that's super situational where you'll CATCH shot arrows and fire them back. Only archers can have this one I believe.

I remember in Suikoden III, you could turn one of the foppish noble type characters into a ridiculous tank w/ white rose brooches, such that he almost always parried and riposted any attacks made on him.

FF Tactics has the underrated Geomancer and its even more underrated counter skill, "Counter Flood." Can respond to a physical attack from any range, ignores terrain in the way, always hits, is actually an AoE so it can hit other enemies as well as the attacker, and has a chance to inflict nasty effects like Petrify or Don't Act.

I forget if it was shadow of Mordor or one of the assassin's Creed games but countering all but guaranteed you were going to slaughter a whole town.

The counter counter counter counter counter counter mechanics in Disgaea are crazy.

Came into post about the geomancer's counterflood in FFT. That gets my vote for coolest. Hang out on stone, water or grass tiles and enemies will be turned into stone, frogs or paralyzed when they attack 20% of the time, and even if the status effect doesn't proc you're still doing damage no matter where they hit you from. And if they've got another enemy next to them, you damage and potentially get a second status effect off. The one draw back is the enemy attacking you happens to have one of your allies adjacent to them, counterflood will hit them.
