Like, they pass on the role or don't want to continue doing it anymore.

Mr Eko didn't want to be on Lost anymore so they wrote him off.

Katie Holmes didn't want to be in The Dark Knight and preferred doing another movie.

Lady Sif also didn't want to be in Thor Ragnarok and wanted to do some other thing.

I wonder what goes through their head? Perhaps fame and fortune is not what they seek, as is typical of all people in showbiz?

Or they do want fame and fortune and think there are other ways to get it?

Lady Sif is now the lead of her own television series, as opposed to an after-thought, side-character in the Thor films.

I guess she'd rather be remembered for a 90s teen drama that only gets mentioned in a "remember how awful this was" way than a box office, Oscar winning hit movie. If you're going to "lol", "lol" at the fact that she and most of Creek's cast will never shake the stigma of being in that show.

What stigma? It was a good teenage drama.

Also you're wrong. Joshua Jackson is a very successful actor who is more well known for being in the Mighty Duck movies than being "Pacey" on Dawson's Creek.

And James van der Beek has had a very successful career as well with some memorable starring roles in movies and on TV.

Maybe, I never watched or knew the existence of that show until the internet. Creek at least owned it when he played a fictionalized version of himself in Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23. And he was hilarious in that but no one watched the show :( .

"Good teenage drama" is on the same level as "good toddler show". Appealing to a demographic and milking it for all it's worth isn't good television , it's smart business sense. Jackson had the Mighty Ducks, Skull & Bones and Fringe. He's arguably the most successful of them all.

I'm not going to say that Van Der Beek isn't living an easier life due to Creek, but anyone saying he's had a highly successful career is deluding themselves. A single mid profile movie and a cancelled show post big break isn't what qualifies as "very successful" in Hollywood.
Then there's Holmes who had a few movie roles and is arguably remembered more for her marriage to Tom Cruise.
Michelle Williams who mostly does indie stuff and is probably the most talented of the bunch.
And then there's the brother and sister (in show) who have barely done anything of note.

So yeah, let your fandom tell you I'm wrong. I watched the show as a kid, rewatched portions as an adult and seen most of the actors' work afterwards. It mostly isn't that pretty.
This would be like me saying Sarah Michelle Gellar had a highly successful career for being in 3 high profile movies post Buffy.

@saspa
I did watch that show and really liked it. It made painfully aware that Van Der Beek is thankful for Creek giving his big break, but that he never was able to shake being Dawson.
