This is always the first thing you hear churches say when they claim to not hate gay people.

'It's okay to be gay, just quit that femme shit, don't even look at another man, don't think of dudes while touching yourself, and don't even think about hooking up with one.'

Ask if they treat adulterers the same way and you'll choke on the hypocrisy. And you can do all of that self-oblation and they'll still treat you like a ticking time bomb around kids, like they're just waiting for pedophilia to just jump out.

For them, I guess their church and its attached community is important enough for them that they're willing to make that sacrifice. For me, it's too much. It betrays the barely disguised hate beneath the supposed olive branch. And I'm not going to ask anyone for permission to exist as I am.

Yeah I spent last night looking through conversion therapy/celibate gay Christians and it's fucking me up, bringing back memories of being a teenager and going online and finding people pushing for this kind of shit. I'm just glad my family isn't like this.

A Christian homophobe I knew said that 'being gay' means more like having gay sex than just having the attraction (though they said the latter is also a choice)

im not advocating for Christianity's treatment of LGBT ppl at all, but from my perspective growing up in a very religious Catholic household, this is all very wrong. if you are truly devout & follow the religion to a T the rules for adultery are not that far off

There was a point where I felt that LGBT people could someday be accepted as Christians but seeing all this shattered that. I don't think that's ever going to happen. They'll always be seen by most Christians as a fringe.

Why did you ever think it was possible lol? Religious people are too stubborn and stuck in their ways

That's a bit drastic. Should definitely cut out the more toxic ones, but not every devout Christian is like that.

This is just my opinion on how Christianity sees homosexualiy:

I think homosexual activity is a sin, not being homosexual itself.

Hence God is testing people by making some of them gay and the ones who do not engage in homosexual acts will go to Heaven if they follow Christianity.

Please note, Im not Christian and I am not homophobic.

Yeah, it's such a weird belief when you try to put yourself in their shoes though. God made you like dicks but you better not act on that! Dicks are bad, well, for you anyway!

Yeah my mom is pretty Christian and is perfectly accepting of gay people. When asked shes given various answers from judge not last ye be judged. Everyone is a sinner but jesus died to forgive our sins and even god only disliked homosexuality because he wanted man to populate the earth but now the earth is plenty populated and therefore no longer a issue. Think she even said the old testament was what said it was bad but the new testament said to disregard the old because thr prophecy had been fulfilled.

The New Testiment mentions it too as a no-no. Some people argue that homosexual is a bad translation in the 3 or so verses it appears in the New Testiment and that wasn't the authors' intent, though. It's kind of fascinating to study. Jesus also said nothing on the subject that has been recorded anyway.

Can't remember is she said it in regards to being gay but i know shes said it about several things in the old testament.

Either way shes christian and is accepting of gay people so I'm cool with her being Christian.

In my experience it's something compelling enough to really fuck you up in a variety of different ways. Religion is fucking weird. I've known an inordinate amount of "born again" type people from the internet and it can range from them just randomly bringing up jesus or christianity in strange places but otherwise being harmless, to completely changing their personalities. Things that they once enjoyed, or clearly would have at some point, they are now looking at from a lens of protecting their purity or defending the reputation of their faith and are bitchy about them. Even if you avoid confrontation, they're clearly ashamed of themselves and likewise sometimes even ashamed of the fact that you were part of their life so it can be hard to be around them.

I'm old enough and have seen it enough times that people turning to faith to alleviate things like depression and hopelessness doesn't really bother me. If it helps them I don't see any reason to needle them about it. But when it develops to the point where they're acting strange in some way about it all the time, or doing things like being a reactionary or (as has happened a few times) outright espousing violence towards groups of people on the grounds of their faith, I see no obligation to remain anywhere around them

I had one friend that fell into the fundamentalist view of things. He did become much stricter, must less interesting, quite a bit less kind/forgiving. I feel like the joy of life just got sucked out of him and most of his creativity. All his energy/time went into analyzing the bible.
