I always thought it would be cool to include multiple real-world variations of weapons. I guess it would be a copyright nightmare is the reason they don't, but instead of just having an M16, they could have a bunch of its revisions too.
I actually had a game idea I worked on a few years back where this made perfect sense. It was a converse stealth game: a combination strategy tower defense business sim. You played as a security contractor, and your job was to micromanage the guards' employment, equipment, patrols, etc. You would earn money on each mission, which you could spend to hire more guards, buy better weapons, etc. You would also be able to give guards individual routes, individual weapons, and give general instructions to how detailed their search should be. Maybe they check all crawlspaces, which obviously results in finding enemies hiding in crawlspaces, but takes more time so enemies can slip by a different way unless you hire more guards. Then MGSV came out and had basically this same thing as more or less a minigame. >_> So I scrapped it. One major difference was in mine, you would have an aerial view and security camera outputs and control it like an RTS. Click a dude and tell him what to do. If you see something suspicious, click somebody nearby and tell them to search the area. Etc. But where this is relevant to the topic is that it made sense as a business sim to offer more choices in weapons. And as the game progressed, you could get licenses to buy more powerful weapons. Like, instead of just having an M16, you can have AR-15, M16, M16A1, M16A2, M16A3, M16A4, M4, etc. The more advanced revisions would cost more money and only be purshasable when you get certain licenses, but they also perform better. And in the case of the M16, the A2 and A4 would be burst-only, for better accuracy and less ammo use (ammo costs money too) while the A1 and A3 would be full auto for better overall DPS. I actually put together a huge list of guns and their stats that I wanted to put in the game too, which I forget them all now but I had several AR-15's, several AKs, several SCARs, etc. --- 53 LIII 0b110101 p16 0x35 ... Don't forget "bonus unlockable" weapons that are just WW2 German or American guns that either suck or are overpowered.
