Want to get off my lazy ass and experience it. Anyone else going and/or familiar with D.C. because I'm struggling to figure out where to park?

Like, I plan on driving to the national mall, can I just park there all day?

I would not take my car that close into the city. Traffic and parking are already awful on a regular day. Security is going to beefed the fuck up for that parade. You can easily commute to the Mall via Metro or your feet depending on where you're coming from.

I was planning on driving from Delaware, however if I wanted to I could drive to Baltimore tonight, stay the night somewhere, and take the bus/Metro

You might be able to find parking within DC proper but I wouldn't try to literally park next to the Mall. Traveling from Baltimore isn't a bad idea either! That train is what, 60-90 minutes? Used to work with someone who used it as his daily commute.

I'm familiar with DC and would avoid that entire area like the plague on the 4th. But I'm extremely jaded as I live in NOVA.

We usually use Parking Buddy, which barely works even on regular days, so I doubt it will be much help on a national holiday. I would just set your expectations for DC very low.

There's a train 5 minutes away from my grandmother's so I'll probably end up doing that

In terms of parking or just visiting? I've been there before to visit Ameican U, I loved being there but driving was a nightmare. Especially 495 during afternoon traffic, man, that shit was whack

Definitely going, would like to see those tanks.

I live close by in Fairfax, so it's easy to find parking in Arlington and then just bike across the river.

Sounds like the annual festivities will be a shit show this year. When I lived there I watched the fireworks show from my friend's roof in Navy Yard and it was awesome. 4th of July in DC typically isn't this politicized and it's a shame for regular folks who just want to watch with families and friends.

Welp my grandmoms isn't answering so it looks like I'm driving unless I can catch her early in the morning. Where's a good place to park it? Like, maybe somewhere away from the action but I can still use the bus and stuff to get around

It's 100% shaping up to be. They're even bringing the Trump baby balloon in to this!

Fairfax and Arlington are in Virginia. You're coming from a different direction. Once you're in DC, I'd look into taking a Metro or bus closer to the Mall. Get ready for hordes of people.

I doubt it.Trump isn't that popular. If you like him then good for you for being an idiot supporting an idiot, but you are in the minority.

Umm, the 4th of July celebration in DC typically gets packed as it is. My comment wasn't about Trump and just general logistics. If people are going to go out of their way to either protest or support the military parade in particular, the crowds will be even worse.

I would say to park somewhere outside the city or on closer to outside the city and take the metro. For me, it depends on who I go with. I have family who work in different parts. So we can usually park at their jobs and metro wherever we need to go. But I probably wouldn't go there on the fourth, anyway. My mom would probably kill me if I went, anyway. She hate when I go anywhere in DC, tbh...

Just got back, ended up parking in a parking garage that was next to a hotel. Traffic wasn't too bad getting there, though I guess I was a little early (got there at 10:30AM)

Anybody want to place any bets on how many red lights you ran or cars you hit?

There was ONE time where I wasn't sure if I should turn on red. there was no signs and it was red for a hella long time so I just jumped when no cars were coming

There are exceptions where you can turn on red. I'm assuming this is one of those exceptions

Unless you were turning right after coming to a complete stop and had assessed the intersection to ensure no pedestrians or oncoming traffic, you cannot turn on red. Ever. No exceptions.
