Ive been looking around for one just to get the local channels. They seem fairly easy to install. Anyone on CE have one? If so is it worth the money? Also what antenna would you recommend I pick up?

They can be hit or miss depending where the broadcasting tower is in your city. If you're close by and you're not in some giant apartment complex, they can be pretty good. Of course, it'll just give you broadcast channels. Good for local sports, local news, and if you want to follow the schedule for broadcast TV series. But I use my streaming services faaaaar more than I watch on my antenna.

There's no such thing as an "hd" antenna. Just rabbit ears with hd printed on them to sucker people who don't know any better.

You're saying an old antenna would still pick up the HD channels?

Yea, they do ok.

The place I stay at dropped satellite/cable two months ago.

Didn't watch much TV anyway.

Now I just keep it on GRIT... a 24 hour western channel.

Lol HD antenna.
Digital receivers can go from free to $10+.

If your TV is relatively new, it may already be built-in

How would I find this out, my tv is pretty old, I think it was manufactured in 2013

Try going into the options and scan for channels. It's probably a little bit different on each TV.

Ok it asked me to select antenna &cable or set top box. Then it asked me air or cable before the channel search. Does it matter what I select?

pick air, cause that will show you if you can pick any up without an antenna

like you might be able to get 1 or 2 channels without an antenna, but adding an antenna will allow you to pick up way more (assuming you live close to towers)

I have one. It's a good backup when the satellite loses signal. You also get extra sub channels, there's several retro sub channels.

TC. 80 miles is a long way, no guarantee that you'll be able to pick up those channels. I would recommend a large outdoor antenna. You want your antenna to be free from obstruction, and the higher the better. Mount the antenna on top of your roof if possible. I would also recommend that you get an antenna amplifier (boost).

Fuck thats what everyone tells me, theyre kind of expensive and Im fucking scared shitless of heights. Does it need to be at the very top of my house or just like where my satellite dish used to be?

It might work like that. I don't recommend going on your roof if you're not comfortable with it. I'm stressed and on high alert when I'm on a roof.

Ya and the very peak of my roof is quite an angle, maybe I could just give a buddy a 30 box or something to mount it for me lol

I picked up an HD antenna off Amazon a couple years ago for like 20-30 bucks. It was a window antenna. The product page had a link to a .gov web address where you can put in your physical address and it would estimate the channels you get. It worked well for me. It said I should get ABC and Fox pretty good, NBC was possible, and I wouldnt get CBS. It all turned out to be true.

Only catch is the thing is useless if its raining. It also came with a signal amplifier but I found my reception was better without it.

You can put an antenna in the attic space if the roof doesnt work. Probably easier and looks better especially if you already have coax cable up there to hook it in (otherwise youd have to fish a cable from the antenna down the wall into the room you have the TV)

Some newer homes that have wiring panels have a run of coax into the attic intended to hook up to an antenna, and then you splice or split the antenna feed to each room you want the signal to go to inside the wiring panel

I say the better option is just hooking your TV up to your computer and streaming live TV from "sites."
