I have a coworker who will just watch you for a few seconds whenever you happen to come into his field of view. Aside from not getting much work done that way, it's just super unnerving.

When someone is watching me I generally watch them back.

Stare back, ask if they are ok, deal with it or make conversation. It all depends the situation. I mean I've just zoned out before and happen to be looking at someone without realising so I don't take it personally in that context but if it's a boss or something watching what I'm doing for a long time with no explanation that's when it gets irksome and my paranoia will kick in.

I stare sometimes. I dont mean to but I daydream a lot and just stare into space. Occasionally this is in someones direction or someone walks into my field of view.

It depends. Usually just ignore. Sometimes break into a song and dance routine, then demand applause: "Did you like that? I've got a million of them."

This I do the same. I was raised to always be aware of whats going on around me so if I catch movement in my periphial I tend to look.

^How long does it take for you to do so though? I try to always be aware of what's happening as well; in fact I'm typically the only person at work who does. But I don't need anywhere from three to ten seconds to look, unless it looks like they might need help with something.

Depends on who/what it is, what they are doing and how busy I am. Like if they look like they are doing something odd or something they shouldnt I'll stare longer. I do try to be less obvious about it though the longer I look.

I think the term you are looking for is glance. Also you are invading his field of view.

Also a glance is a form of acknowledgement as well as an opening to see if you are open to interactions like questioning or to see what you want.

I don't know how defined your rolls are but seeing what you're up to helps assess what tasks to do next.

Work is monotonous and pretty much anything can be a distraction from having to acknowledge the meaningless existence that it instills.

I'm clearly talking about much more than a glance.

Their roles have very little to do with watching me, and they're specifically not doing their work while watching me.

Maybe they're high so when something comes they lazily glance at it for a few seconds then go back to do what they're doing

I stare a lot. Most of the time it's because I'm think if I wanted to ask that person something. My line of work is a lot if back and forth. I do recognize that I'm staring and will say sorry, because I get lost in thought. It's also tough because my current kiddo is a nonverbal 3 year old with sib and compliance issues so he has a lot of times when I can't give him attention and I just can't say anything until he stops punching himself.
