Like its a never ending battle of accomplishing something with your life only to be told that youre still living in a world of entitlement complexes and unwillingness to work hard.

...

Children born after 2000 need a hard lesson in life, though.

Also a common perception of I have of baby boomers is people my age dont know how the world really works and that voting for things like social aid and government growth vs. deeper privatization doesnt work. Like as you get older you start thinking like they will and come to understand Its MY money, stop taxing it! and other such self-serving ideas (like voting down school funding because you dont have any school-aged kids so theres nothing in it for you, not regarding the potential good that can come from having a well-educated society).

One of the biggest differences between kids of the 90s and kids of the 50s, I feel, is that the 90s kids want to make the world a better place for those that come after. They may not LIKE the next generation but regardless of that its not enough of a reason to vote against them or make their lives crap. There is a recognition that, yes, the world will belong to someone other than us in a few decades and that world deserves to be preserved and protected for those inheriting it.

That self-awareness just seems so faint among those who were kids in the 50s and 60s, a generation that only wanted the world they currently lived in and the next round would figure it out when its their turn. The fact that they didnt leaves them feeling bitter and smug towards those kids because they did so why cant we, not realizing that they laid the groundwork for making the world as difficult as it is now. From that comes an absolution of responsibility that its not their job to improve the world because they already had their time and just want to enjoy the retirement they earned. Complaining about your life is something bratty kids do who dont know real values.

The kids of the 50s were one of the most politically radical generations ever, the driving force behind the social revolutions of the 1960s and 70s and who did most of the work to drag issues such as civil rights and environmental activism into the public consciousness.

True but what happened? Those same people were the ones praising Operation Enduring Freedom. 9/11 was terrible but infinitely occupying the middle east as a response goes against everything that people hated about Vietnam.

The reality of your question is shown in some of these comments. "fuck that generation" "why would we want their respect".

Regardless if this is actually how the majority feels or not it is certainly outspoken enough. The age of the internet gave voices to masses of people that would not have been heard locally before. This is seen everywhere and it's pretty depressing regardless of which generation you belong to.

This also isn't new. Even the boomers grandparents thought they were idiots. A couple decades from now you will more than likely feel pretty disconnected from the new generation and question their morals because they differ from yours.

Because I don't think the real divide in society is necessarily about age. I've no idea how many veterans of anti-Vietnam War protests actually felt able to support everything Uncle Sam did in Iraq, but I'd point out that 9/11 seemed to turn a hell of a lot of Americans of all ages into war hawks for a while.

The younger generation grew up with technology and media making us more connected and knowledgeable outside our own neighborhoods.

Its natural that empathy...especially at a surface level is more pronounced.

Yet what I find paradoxical is that in today's wired world, when theoretically we're more connected than ever before to every corner of the globe, the capacity for human empathy has actually shrivelled and in some respects there seems to be more apathy, more ignorance, more cynicism, and less willingness among younger people to involve themselves in causes by comparison with, say, the 1980s.

In some ways yes.

Part of it is just the existing apathy being more visible than it used to be.

Part of it is cynicism from being aware of every bad thing that happens from the media.

And some of it is simply fear of the internet's/shitty legal systems brutal judgement destroying your life for one misstep and being forever shamed and followed for it even if nothing actually wrong happened

Baby boomers to their credit will actually give people a shot. In my office experience, Gen Xers can be the worst. I think that has to do with animosity over how yeah, they sorta grew up with technology, but they just didnt have access to computers as kids compared to millennials. I think its hard to ever top that as a workplace advantage in a generational gap.

Boomers are the worst. Were handed every fucking advantage in the world to get a leg up, then turned around and slammed the door behind them to fuck everyone after them because they didn't want to pay into the programs that helped them.

The fact that they now call millenials lazy is the absolute height of projection, and they can't possibly die out soon enough.
