There's nothing inherently inclusive about making inferior versions of great original source material.

Right, and they did a fair enough job making them more "inclusive" or rather, less alienating to the general populace by making the stories into something that can be enjoyed by everyone instead of killing the vibe with crap endings or other weird stuff. Those re-tellings of old tales were good enough not only to stand on their own two legs, but have become "the" stories to most people.
