Ehhhh, but in the first Terminator John is the leader of the resistance in the post-apocalyptic war for quite some time. He figures out how to fight back against the first terminators when the machines eventually invent them.

It will make no difference as the leaks already confirmed he is only in the first 5-10 minutes before they throw John Connor and Skynet out the window.

Terminator Dark Fate does NOT respect the lore or any of what the first 2 movies established. The film is another Ghostbusters 2016 fuck you to fans of the franchise.

I just think the idea that "well, he wasn't that important anyways" kind of flies in the entire face of Terminator 1 and 2.

Well...yeah. John Connor was THE leader of the human resistance, he was the single most important character in the franchise. He's pretty much the reason why the entire series happens. Without him, there's no point. For over twenty years or whatever we've been told that John Connor is absolutely important and to kill him off under the guise of "eh, we didn't need him" is a total slap in the face of practically the entire series.

Terminator 2 also went forward with the idea that the fate that Sarah Connor made was one where Skynet was destroyed along with all traces of Terminator technology.

Like, in Terminator 1, she lived, but that's all that happened. She did nothing about Skynet or the terminators and when she tried (between movies), she was institutionalized as a schizophrenic.

Terminator 2's ending had quite a bit of finality to it. Skynet should have never made after what Sarah did. There shouldn't have even been a Terminator 3 in the first place and there's no reason for this movie to exist, either.

Honestly Terminator as a series has never really made sense once you go past the first one. John Connor doesn't exist without the events in Terminator 1. So why is she able to do anything different in Terminator 2? Terminator 1 shows you a perfect time loop. Any other movies that have diverged from that concept need to break it and make things more complicated.

You just gotta go along with the ride and accept whatever retcons they give ya.
