It's one of those things I have a hard time understanding...
I have meet many individuals who are on the surface seem like genuinely nice folks, that is until politics come along and they revealed to hold some extremely abhorrent and backward views like: being against gay marriage & LGBT rights, believing that gay is "a mental illness that needs to be cured", that immigration is ruined America etc.. It's really sad and depressing... I wonder why and how some people come to hold such backward viewpoints... ... Copied to Clipboard!

The answer is that the world is not a dichotomy of good and evil and few things are entirely divided across those lines, but when you're entirely on one side of an issue, you see the world as if it is. Especially when your political views are comprised of absolutes like "all people who believe X are Y."

cause the people around them agree with them. a lot of that stuff you're talking about has been normalized for decades or centuries or longer
