That $312 million in the original domestic run would be more like $537 million in 2019 dollars, and it doesn't account for the rising number of theaters and moviegoers in general. Have you noticed how the new benchmark for a mega-hit is a billion dollars? It used to be a lot less. I think some movies are review proof. Especially kids movies and stuff people are familiar and invested in. Even comparing the opening scene with Scar there's a huge gulf between them. Technically it's very impressive.
