Imagine Odin sorting through his mail getting increasingly perturbed at how he keeps getting letters addressed to Wuotan.

You forgot Tyrsday.

And Saturday isn't a reference to Surtur, it's a reference to Saturn.

Basically, the original days of the week came from the Romans, and every day was more or less named after a god (Sol-day, Luna-day, Mars-day, Mercury-day, Jupiter-day, Venus-day, Saturn-day), which is why in Romance languages like French the names are derived from the Roman versions (Lundi, Mardi, Mercredi, Jeudi, Vendredi, Samedi - the odd one out is "Dimanche" for Sunday, which means "day of the lord").

When the German tribes adapted those days, they changed the name to match their own gods, so Mars became Tyr, Venus became Frigga, etc. They kept Saturn, though, because apparently they didn't have a god in mind similar enough to replace him with.

English is mostly derived from Germanic (though it does have a ton of Romance influences from Latin, which came in via Norman French, which is why there are so many analogous words between modern English and modern French), and the days of the week probably found their way into England via the Angles and Saxons. So in English we wound up with the Norse names instead of the Latin ones.

No, it means you have to stab yourself with a spear, hang yourself upside down from a tree, and spend nine days there until you learn the secret of the runes.

Or you have to pluck one of your eyes out and drink from a well.

Those are the rules!

Instructions unclear.
Does learning the secret of the runes take exactly 9 days?
Should I remain hanging there if I learn the secret of the runes in under 9 days?
It will be Wednesday again after 7 days, does this require starting over?
