Yeah, I went to go see Once Upon in Hollywood yesterday and I got all 3 of those trailers back to back and I was like "Holy shit, I hope I'm not sexist for thinking all of those movies look like shit"

And if there were three trailers in a row showcasing "man power" it would just be considered normal. Which is the issue.

They are just trying to let women catch up, most movies are still focused on men.

The issue of whether the movies are good or not is a completely separate issue. Don't look at bad movies focused on women and say it was their fault. Also don't blame sexism when people don't like your movie focused on women. That's the argument I see all the time for the new Ghostbusters movie. I haven't seen it though so I can't comment on how good it was.

I think there can be a legitimate issue if they're making them for the sake of making them. If they're shitty movies, then yeah I can see the critique. But if we're getting 3 back to back Atomic Blonde quality films then it's a pretty stupid complaint to make.

However it's apparent TC isn't really complaining out of good faith

The Kitchen looks like a legitimately good movie. Charlie's Angels is generic empowerment fare. I can't speak for Hustlers as I don't recall having seen that trailer. The problem with girl power is that producers can't resist the urge to include witty/provocative dialogue designed to let you know that, yes, she is strong because she's female. Dialogue for male characters is never designed in such a way as to say, "I'm tough 'cause I've got this penis." That's the difference.

Hollywood today reminds me of a Simpsons clip where Lisa states, "That's right, a girl wants to play football!" only to lose her sense of self-importance when she discovers the team is inclusive and already has female players. It's important to have female characters, including characters of strength, but the obvious grabs at brownie points or the need for self-worth is rather obnoxious on the whole.

Still, I guess it's better to have a 50% female protagonist ratio and have many of have quote jarring lines of empowerment than it is have a male dominated film industry. I nitpick their methods (and political motives), but the end result is better than if they hadn't made these kinds of movies.

The kitchen is way too unrealistic. Have they been in the hood?? They'd get slapped around by gang bangers off the rip.

Isn't The Kitchen based on a true story? Or am I just imagining seeing that in the commercials for the movie? The first two Charlie's Angels movies were awful, and from what I have read about the direction they are taking this one it sounds like it will be even worse. I don't know anything about Hustlers though. Skye has it completely correct however in that it's the way the write the dialogue.

There's a reason why no one complained about any of the female MCU characters for years, but people hate Captain Marvel. Difference being no one cared they were chicks. They were superheroes that happened to be female. Unlike Danvers who it had to be pointed out a thousand times that "THE MOST POWERFUL MARVEL CHARACTER EVER IS A FEMALE!!!!!!"
