So my wife decided we are getting a puppy I am against it because our cat is not used to (nor does he like) other animals.

On top of that I really want nothing to do with taking care of the dog. So I made my opinion clear and my wife fully understands that she will be taking care of this puppy by herself, I just agreed not to be an ass to said puppy.

Our cat though, is also not a very smart cat. When he wants a door opened he jumps 6 ft in the air at the door hinges -_-.

So my wife got a 2ft gate that we setup in the master bedroom because we want the cat to get used to the gates before we get the puppy in two weeks.

Well my very dumb cat seems to think the 2ft gate is completely impenetrable (even though he likes to jump 6 ft in the air at door hinges) and believes himself to be locked in our master bedroom.

He tried to squeeze through the bars, got stuck.
He tried to push the bars to the side, didn't work

We stood on both sides of the gate and threw him over it about twice each, he was amazed that he somehow managed to get past the impenetrable prison. He still doesn't know how though...

We tried offering treats on the other side of the gate and putting treats on top of the gate (at which point he just batted them down by standing up on his hind legs)

Last night we "locked" our cat in our bedroom with us hoping that if he gets hungry/thirsty enough he will get desperate enough to jump over the gate.

When I woke up this morning he was sleeping directly in front of the gate from our bedroom side.

Anyone have any ideas how we can convince are cat he is NOT in fact imprisoned by a 2 ft gate?

Maybe you could try setting up a mini set of stairs leading up to the gate to see if that convinces him.

Maybe use a string or something he can chase?

And then slowly deconstruct it so he learns to make bigger and bigger leaps.

Sounds like he's only used to jumping high for the sake of hitting a target, not jumping over obstacles. Maybe give him something to hit that's above and past the gate, until he figures it the fuck out?

I think I am going to try the stair thing, and then start deconstructing it...

I also might trying hanging a string on the other side kinda like a pinata so he has a target to jump towards, because as envoy mentioned, he usually only jumps really high when he has something he is aiming for.

So right now my wife has 2 clothes baskets upside down, the cat has determined he CAN in fact escape his 2ft prison using the clothes baskets.

Tomorrow after "locking him" in our room again, we are going to reduce it to something 75% to 50% as tall as the clothes baskets.
