Yoshi's Island has got to be up there:

kBjR9mH
nzXVlez

On Genesis, Treasure obviously made the best looking stuff, not even really any competition imo:

ShZxgEg
gPDjrDM

For TG16, Rondo of Blood is duh best:

tscnr9N

I'll upload more when I think of more. I'm trying to get some good gifs of 32-bit 2D games.

Neo Geo has a ton of great stuff, I'll try to find some. Metal Slug and Waku Waku 7 stand out for me personally.

IMO Chrono Trigger holds up pretty well. Other jrpgs with tall sprites do as well.

I agree, a lot of the later Square stuff is awesome. I tried to find stuff from Bahamut Lagoon and SD3 but nothing good came up at first blush

For 16-bit, I've always liked Tales of Phantasia (SNES). It released quite late in the gen.

I struggled to find decent screenshots of it:

https://fantasyanime.com/legacy/top_shots.htm

For 32-bit, obviously there's SotN. The Saturn probably had some good looking 2D games too (including SotN incidentally).

Valkyrie Profile (PS1) supposedly has 2D backgrounds, but I think there's some 3D as well. I've never played it.

I've never played a Saturn, but I heard that the Saturn version of SotN is worse than the PS1 version because it was developed for the PS1 originally.

Whatever that style of graphics is called where they create 3D models and map them to sprites (prerendered?) hasn't aged as well as the regular style imho. But the DKC series does a lot of other neat visual effects, so I still agree they look good.

Came here to say DKC series. While it may have not aged good(I disagree tbh), it aged better than most of psone games. SOTN is the only (mostly)2d psone game that comes to my mind that looks better than any snes DKC.

Since I experienced both at the same time(snes came really late for me), a mix of nostalgia and impression of the time makes me say that DKC 1-3 have a really good looking graphics

Yes, they called it ACM back in the day (Advanced Computer Modelling).

Done right it looks pretty good, look at Killer Instinct

It's funny how DKC was at the time generally considered more impressive graphically than Yoshi's Island. I guess it had to do with the limitations of tech at the time and the fact that no 2D platformer had really gone for that faux-3D style up to that point.

Yoshi's Island has obviously aged better but I still love the SNES DKC aesthetic a lot...

I love the graphics, don't get me wrong. Still, today I'd say the music is really what makes them shine aesthetically, more than anything.

I think what made DKC so breath taking, graphics wise, was all those parallax layers that move independently. You have one line of trees moving slow, one moving fast, then your character moving, then some foliage moving right behind you at a different speed. In some stages you have stuff IN FRONT of you (e.g. snow).

Their 32 bit game, Princess Crown, is brought up in these kind of topics often. I've never played a Saturn, and I can't find good pics, but it does look nice
