The Saturn probably had some good looking 2D games too (including SotN incidentally). Valkyrie Profile (PS1) supposedly has 2D backgrounds, but I think there's some 3D as well. I think what made DKC so breath taking, graphics wise, was all those parallax layers that move independently. You have one line of trees moving slow, one moving fast, then your character moving, then some foliage moving right behind you at a different speed.
