This one looks like it has half-decent specs and is from a 5k+ rated reseller on ebay who has a lot of listings for the same unit but... idk, it's a used unit. I've only ever had one brand new laptop, and that was when I got a compensation payment for something; I've never been able to afford one otherwise. Good models though. If something is going to fail, it usually fails in the first few hours of operation, so the previous owner has already done the burn-in testing for you. If it works when you look at it in the pawnshop, it should keep working for years. Used notebooks can be a great deal, especially if you're looking at notebooks that weren't bottom shelf to begin with. Be sure you scrutinize their returns policy and warranty, even the larger and more competent refurbishers have some that fall through the cracks. If it looks like they have a ton of them it's usually a safe gamble, if something is wrong they'll either be able to replace the parts easily or simply swap the entire machine for a good one. My daily drivers right now are HP EliteBooks and were bought used, they're tough machines and the ProBooks are close cousins. Just know there's a good chance you'll want/need to invest in a new battery, perhaps not initially but I'd guess within a year or 2. Not that these places intentionally ship out dead batteries, but this is an area that obviously gets the most basic of checks, and no battery lasts forever. ~~Except for the one in my DS Lite, apparently that does actually last forever somehow.~~ <cite>Red_Frog posted [p:925517463] in Would you ... Back in late 2008, I paid a bit over $700 for a desktop pc (including a monitor) that I bought directly from Dell that only lasted until 2012 or 2013 (or maybe later? Hard to be sure). I thought buying direct from the manufacturer was the way to go, but the DVD-RW drive had issues and, when I finally bothered contacting them to get it resolved by the end of the warranty period, the repair tech mentioned that a cord had never been hooked up (so the drive itself was probably functional all along). The performance on the device was okay but it began to slow down and failed to consistently turn on during the last few months of its life. I'm not sure if it was a matter of the cooling system starting to fail (causing things to overheat?) or just the hard drive going. When that died or was dying, I wound buying a HP Envy m6 from Office Max for again somewhere within the $700 range. My decision to move from desktop to laptop was, at the time, mostly just for personal convenience since it offered added mobility and access. I liked how it worked, it had a fingerprint scanner which I thought was really cool, a backlit keyboard, etc. Of course, I didn't buy a protection plan and within 2-3 years it had received enough damage to interfere with how the chassis closed (I think it might have been a gradual process where it wasn't connected to a specific drop. However, even before then, I realized that I didn't feel secure bringing the laptop with me everywhere outside the home -- because I was worried that if something happened to it, not only would I lose my personal files but it'd also screw up my work since I was telecommuting at the time as well as doing freelance work on the side. The solution seemed to be to buy a cheaper, more disposable laptop to take with me so I could leave the other one at home. I found a Toshiba Satellite at Staples for $200 (or $250?). It was underpowered as hell and, within several months,I determined it was impossible to reasonably multitask on the device. I knew the specs were low, I just hadn't realized what that meant in terms of performance. Going forward, I realized I needed a minimum of a Pentium i5. The laptop still works (although it had an issue or two -- it wasn't turning off properly before I went to a relative's wedding, so I placed it in my basement and I worry that it might have also gotten dust in it at that point) and I've used it for minor things since getting my other laptop, just as a backup. That brings me to laptop #3, a Lenovo... I can't remember. I picked it up on clearance at Best Buy maybe 2-4 years ago for about $350. The specs seemed reasonably comparable to my HP Envy but, instead of an Intel Core i5, it had an AMD A8 which, when I did some research, looked comparable. However, the performance was never quite on par with my HP Envy. I think the issues started within the past month or two. Things came to a head when it blackscreened so, to resolve the program, I unplugged the device and let the battery run... and then later after it still hadn't loaded, I did the same thing... and again. I believe that attempted troubleshoot put it on its last legs since the performance has tanked. It'll be sluggish or near freeze for hours at times. While I suppose I could get it repaired, the HP Envy has some significant damage as well. After I had that chassis closing issue, the thing had warped along the back to the point that I couldn't close it at all. Therefore whenever I went to move the laptop, I had to carry it as is. (I'm not 100% sure how the chassis issue came out, although I think it might have been accumulated micro-damage either from carrying it while open or taking bumps while open.) Eventually I dropped the unit, which basically separated the main part from the screen. The only thing still connecting the two pieces are the cords. It's been stationary and permanently propped up since. I had considered getting it repaired at the time, but moving it seemed a hassle and for a long time I couldn't take the down time. Plus I wasn't sure how the expense of a repair would stack up against just buying another unit and, of course, I also had the same security issues where they could install malware or gain access to something like my Paypal. Between the external and internal issues, I'm reasonably sure that the repairs now would cost roughly the same as getting another laptop/pc, if not more if I go with something like this. tl;dr - I've always bought new in the past, but I haven't really seen a good value for it. And if I'm expecting something to last maybe 5 years max, I'm a little less concerned about that aspect of buying used although i worry about it crapping out within a year. Granted, if things go really bad, I kinda wonder if I could harvest the parts from one to repair the other? I know that people are big on doing those kinds of changes for desktops.
