I'm sitting in one, waiting for the Mrs to finish browsing, and there's a lot of foot traffic in here. I can't help but think: why?

You could buy the books way cheaper on amazon, but you cannot hold them in your hand and see if you like what is in said book.

Not the same. Can't turn the pages or smell it or see how big the lettering.

Also, some people don't know what book they want. They browse to see what exists.

I go there a ton.

I actually order books through the store instead of saving a bit of money and ordering online just to give them more sales.

Course I am old fashioned and hate e-readers, and also can't stand starting a new author without physically holding one of their books and reading sections at random to see if I like their writing style.

I agree. Font and page type is a big issue for me when I'm reading a book.

But I'm very lucky since I live in Portland and we have legit one of the best book stores in America

B&N has diversified their stock and has started selling a lot of things that aren't books, like music, including vinyl, and things that sell better with a hands on approach like art books and such. They also rent space to Starbucks and function as a defacto library that you can't check anything out of but can read whatever while you're there and most of the time people pay for coffee while doing it.

At my thrift store, they don't even consider the actual value, length or condition of the book. $1 for paperback, $1.50 for hardback.

It's also a great gift buying spot. I generally get people books as gifts (coffee table books, etc) and it's much harder doing that via amazon. A gift is all about presentation so I like to see the book in person to see if its impressive. Once I have it in hand at that point I buy it.

Also, I work in entertainment and at times I've needed a play day of and can't wait for amazon. Standard novels and such though yeah amazon.

If I buy books I almost always buy them from Barnes & Noble. I don't have Amazon Prime, and in my experience, for what I mostly buy (manga), it's been cheaper to buy from Barnes & Noble every time. I also like shopping there for tabletop games, and other stuff around Christmas time.

They've expanded way beyond just books, they also sell merchandise and board games and they tend to have a Starbucks inside.

They don't have too many stores or too much competition. And there are still some people who like to go there to get physical books for themselves or as gifts.

Also Barnes and noble cafes are always full.

I've never heard of it, at least.

Pretty sure its Canadian only. Coles and Chapters are both owned by Indigo.

I work at a pretty large Chapters and last year was one of their worst financially. But that wasnt due to sales, reportedly they tried expanding too quickly.

The location that I work at has roughly 60-70% of its square footage dedicated to books. They sell a really surprising amount of other stuff like clothes, home office stuff, etc.

With books, were trained to make sure customers know that the online prices from Indigo are often cheaper. Theyre paying extra for the service experience, basically. The store has a Starbucks attached and a big table to sit and read in the back.

I dont personally get it, but apparently many customers will pay a premium for the atmosphere and opportunity to relax and read a book in the store. Guessing that its the same with Barnes and Noble.

We had a training summit recently and they focused on that exact thing, actually. They talked about how companies that sell necessities and those that sell total non-necessities are always the most successful. Those that try to operate in a grey area, at least with physical locations, always fall to the wayside. According to them. So Indigo and B&N lean into the premium but unnecessary aspect of it, and it seems to be working still.

Also, no surprise that most of our customers are older and likely either dont want to / dont know how to shop online, or use bookstores as one place for social interaction.
