I like to watch speedruns of various games and after watching the masterpiece that is Super Metroids, I found myself watching MP3s. I only beat SM and MP1, and I was only able to endure about five collective (painful) minutes of MP3s speedrun. Did they try introducing conversations? And human interaction? Abysmal, from the looks of it. And then something about a dramatic death scene at the end? Wtf?

Is this game largely regarded as a mess?

It was fine.

But my least favorite Metroid Prime.

Mind you, i love the series so that might seem like a bit of a harsh condemnation when it really isn't.

I hear Echoes is the worst of the trilogy.

It is my personal favorite Metroid Prime and maybe my second favorite Metroid game after Zero Mission.

I've always considered Metroid Prime 3 the beginning of the end of the franchise's greatness, culminating with Other M

like Other M is one of the worst games of all time (relatively speaking to its franchise/company's prestige) but I thought MP3 was a flop too

After one playthrough it used to be 1 > 3 > 2 for me, but now I think it's probably 1 > 2 > 3. I found MP2 a bit tedious initially, more so than MP3, but in hindsight I enjoyed its atmosphere much more than MP3's. Still, MP3 is very good, and at least it tries to mix things up in the trilogy (not that much) with the NPCs, non-connected worlds, motion controls etc. MP2 was basically MP1 with the tried and true Dark World concept.

The most important thing is that all three are great games, quite a consistent trilogy. Still love Prime 1 by far the most.

3 lacked the great atmosphere and feeling of isolation in all the great Metroid game where you are dropped one some planet alone and can't leave until you've accomplished your quest. Being able to fly between different planets almost paradoxically made the world seem smaller. 2 was pretty good and had really great bosses, but the dark world was uninspiring both in concept and in practice. 1 is probably a top 10 game of all time for me.

This is an unusual thing to say given that Other M was literally the next game in the series and there have been games since then. It's not "the beginning of the end!" it's "well these two next to each other I didn't like". Especially since Prime and regular Metroid are handled by entirely different people (not just studios, but those at the top as well).

Anyway, no, Prime 3 is great. It also got fantastic reviews and sold well so yeah. But I am reasonably sure this is a joke post given that the reason for it seems to be that there was human interaction in the game.

I never finished Metroid Prime 3, idk i kinda lost interest but I hope I can play it again in the future. Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite though as someone mentioned earlier the bosses are fantastic in it.

It's fine. Not great, especially on replay, but it's not bad. It tried new things.

First one is still the best. A few bosses aside, I didn't like the second one since it was even more of a backtrack-fest than the first and did deliberate things to make the backtracking even longer.

Ergo, I liked how MP3 went out of its way to, y'know, have almost zero backtracking. This is a very pro/con sort of thing.

Also, MP3 has a boss theme that's probably the best piece of music in the entire franchise.

there has been one metroid game in the last 9 years and we're at least two years away from the next one

I haven't played samus returns yet, I heard it was... fine

federation force doesn't count

other M really did kill the series for a while

As for Prime 3 I agree that it's the travel between planets and the existence of story cutscenes and characters that sort of stripped the game of its atmospheric qualities, the world feels small and I don't really find the adventure as compelling

It's an amazing game that I grew to appreciate more on each consecutive playthrough. 1 > 3 > 2, but they're all wonderful.

It's way better than fine and I don't fine is the reception it got either. There was definitely a break but it's not the longest hiatus the series has ever taken either. You wouldn't say Super Metroid killed the series!

A part of why that break was so long actually is Federation Force though. They were trying to make that game for a looooooong time, before Other M even came out. It got pushed back and pushed back for various reasons, mainly needing the New 3DS to work well. Then you add stuff like the cancellation of Dread and Prime 4 development restarting and to me it is pretty clear that Other M alone didn't kill the series - it's a variety of development factors that have gotten in the way of new games. Also sales, the series is now a low tier series for Nintendo in terms of sales - probably their second lowest selling major (active) series after Star Fox? So there wasn't much motivation to pump them out anyway.

Other M was not a successful game critically or commercially but I think it only meant no more games like Other M. Metroid's struggles are bigger series problems.

Yeah I mean I guess, just understand from my perspective the franchise pretty much took 13 years off between Prime 2 and Samus Returns
