Basically, the young are generally stupid, aimless, and don't appreciate anything. You really don't start to understand the value the boundless energy and opportunity you wasted until you're much older and don't have much of either. It's sort of like "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence", though in this case, the other side of the fence is basically your own past.
