his point wasn't stated very delicately, but it is nonetheless a valid point. mass shootings are not the only crisis in America that is responsible for lives lost.

Was anyone claiming otherwise?

With the way media attention is almost solely focused on such matters one would think so. In reality, we need more daily media attention on issues that actually kills people at a 100x rate per year than mass shootings do, like obesity or heart disease. But thats just my take, I get people feel differently and feel mass shootings deserve the appropriate attention it does in comparison to other matters of public health.

anyone who defends NdGT is a foreveralone? is this really a post? what the fuck is your problem?

Never said that anyone who defended him is a forever alone, just that plenty who do that post here seemingly lack empathy, and that an inability to recognize why people have an emotional reaction towards mass shootings like we've seen makes me think they likely struggle with having any type of emotions period.

I truly feel bad for people so detached from all feelings that they can't understand why saying stuff like he said is going to be upsetting. It has to be hard going through life with such a sad nihilistic view point.

People killing THEMSELVES through obesity and unhealthy lifestyles is a different story than getting shot in the chest because you went to a park or movie.

This is true, though I would argue the reason for diseases such as heart disease being so rampant in our country runs far deeper in the chain of causality than mere personal choice. To put it simply as I possibly can, there are more imperceptible causal links which plays into the epidemic we have regarding heart disease than we do mass shootings, and while the latter is more immediately palpable, the former slowly poisons our society from within without our noticing. thats just my personal take on the issue though, I understand people have different opinions on the matter

I actually agree with you. It's disgusting what the corn/sugar industries have done to our food and how they subliminally trick people into horrible food choices. I'm all for making changes there as well.

That said, that's not what we're talking about right now. How will we ever accomplish anything if we bring up an issue and just say "nevermind this there are other issues we should talk about instead."

We can solve more than one problem at once (in theory, when the gov't isn't ensnared in a partisan deadlock). However, Neil DeGrasse Tyson makes a valid point in that shooting deaths receive a weirdly disproportionate amount of news coverage compared to all the other societal problems which are killing way more people. When I hear parents commenting that their kids are afraid to go to school, or afraid that a gunman could be lurking around any corner, that's neither healthy nor warranted by the data. The perceived threat wildly exceeds reality.

No, he doesn't. These mass shootings are representative of very deep flaws in out society. Emotions don't some how invalidate everything. Emotions are a fundamental part of how humans interact, and are there for a fundamental part or society.
