I'm doing pretty good stopping myself from just going out and buying some booze, but it is strange feeling depressed and feeling this compulsion to drink to deal with it even though I know for sure it will not help.

Double ironically the thing that sometimes helps, exercise, I have 0 compulsion to want to do.

Chronic severe depression sucks. But at least I'll give myself moderate credit in that I'm not drinking even though nothing is stopping me.

Is it bad that I am on the fence about going up to get something to drink....but part of my motivation is because I think the bike ride would be good for me and tends to break up my day. And yes there is something oddly compulsory about drinking.

There are several AA online support chat rooms.

I'm sure all of them would welcome you warmly.

Maybe I should. I've usually avoided AA type things because I don't like my life being defined by an addiction. And also Alcohol isn't my problem it's a chronic bad depression that despite so much of my life being spent addressing hasn't yet really changed enough.

I need AA type support but for bad depression basically. They still are a good idea either way. Thanks.

I just took the bike ride up to grab a few.
I'm going to say it is healthy...but just the act of hopping on a bike and getting a little exercise does make you feel better.
