Given, it's almost 40 years old, so it makes sense that it's been forgotten, but the movie is so goddamn good, and has some of the outright scariest scenes I've ever encountered in a horror movie. And the scares are genuine, creep you out scares, with only one jump scare in the entire movie(one both effective and well earned).

If you like haunted house stories, this is probably the best. Give it a shot.

Its not that forgotten (it wasn't the biggest horror movie of the year in the first place - obviously The Shining), but I don't disagree with the sentiment that its nonetheless severely overlooked. Definitely a classic of the ghost story sub-genre. I saw it for the first time last year, and was particularly impressed by how seemingly effortless the creepiness factor was, and also how it (like another of my favorite horror movies, Don't Look Now) utilized grief and loss, and guilt, into the story and woven into the fabric of the horrors.

I've seen the 2008 Clint Eastwood one, found it standard unimpressive Clint Eastwood fare. For a guy who starred in multiple great movies, the guy's directing is disappointing.

But that's a different movie. From the sound of things, it's not even the same story lol.

I thought Changeling was one of Eastwood's better directed movies, honestly.

I think I may still prefer the original The Haunting for that, although the changeling is definitely from that lost era of horror that doesn't revolve around jump-scares.

I don't even hate jump scares, but there's something different about slow, chilling horror.

IIRC what you are describing is terror vs horror. Both get lumped into the same category where movies are concerned, but psychologically they are distinct effects triggered by different things. Jump-scares are terror, not horror, and I kind of wish the genre was split into those two categories.

In his case, it's because he's already so traumatized from recent events that he's a little numb to the horror.
