There was the whole thing with Ant-Man back in the day where Disney didn't want Edgar Wright to make an Edgar Wright movie. But we also have stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok that, although they do still stay in the Marvel lane, they are very much products of their respective artist. Do you think Disney will let out the leash a little bit in the near future and let people do their own thing as long as they stay within the general lore and guidelines they have, or do you think they'll mandate what directors can do? With them digging into some goofier stuff going forward some unique director vision could be pretty good.

I absolutely hope so. Taika Waititi managed to make Thor interesting to me. Would love to see what other nuanced directors can accomplish.

^Yeah, I think they were a bit scared to get away from the formula going into phase 2. They took their one risk with Guardians and it paid off but that was all they were risking. Now with both Guardians and Ragnarok being some of the highest rated and them being pretty much unsinkable at this point they might take a few more risks.

You can definitely still see Wrights influence in Ant-Man, but I would have loved to see his full take on it

Well Kenneth Branagh directed the first Thor

And it was pretty bad. I wonder if they just didn't let him do anything at all or that was literally his creative vision for the film. I guess he may just not have had much consideration or knowledge of the material.

That's one of my biggest what ifs. People can talk about the Snyder Cut all they want but the Wright cut of Ant-Man could have been something else. I wonder if he'd be willing to work with them again if they eased up a bit on that kind of thing.

They haven't stepped outside of the box with like 25 fucking movies
why would they do it now?

Playing it safe has made them billions

Their movies are fairly diverse but they can always expand in order to avoid stagnation. The fabled "super hero fatigue" is still nowhere close but I know it's something they talk about.

Yeah, I think it would help if their films all felt varied. Going through the movies in order and The Incredible Hulk felt...VERY different from the rest of the MCU so far. Dark theming, more serious, the violence being incredibly brutal...

Nah. Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Guardians, Thor Ragnarok and Spiderman FFH are all very different movies with different themes/genres.
