Sports that are popular elsewhere in the world like cricket, rugby, sumo, and to a lesser extent, soccer dont appeal to me compared to the sports I grew up with, like baseball and basketball (I can certainly get into soccer during the World Cup, though). Id imagine that most people outside of America dont care about American football and baseball because it just wasnt available to them growing up. Thats all. If it were regarded as something entirely unique, rather than the first impression being that of some foreign sport infringing on another sport's rightful name (while also being an offshoot of rugby on top of that), it would probably have gained more traction. A lot boils down to a really bad first impression imo. But of course, maybe not.
