As far as I knew, Black Canadians started the first ever Black only league in Preston Nova Scotia, ariund 1908 or something, while the actual sport was conceived in the 1890s but predominantly white people?

Also, there's paintings from Europe dating back to the late sixteen hundreds/early seventeen hundreds that depicts people on ice with hockey like sticks.

Anyway, give me more deets so I can be corrected or proven right.

I get the soccer on skates comparison but low scoring is about the furthest thing from the modern NHL. Fights are barely part of the game anymore.

It literally is tradition. It's really waning now but fights were a safety valve for a sport where pretty much everybody has knives on their feet and polearms in their hands. If you let a couple of big lads give themselves brain damage every once and a while the weaselly guys are less likely to get angry enough to try and murder somebody on the ice. Fighting on skates is fun as hell, too.

Basketball players don't go faster than olympic sprinters while carrying weapons and hitting guys into walls.

I love fights in all sports. They're exciting. When I am watching a game live and a fight breaks out everyone is like "fight! Fight!" And we all get on our feet and watch closely and get all excited and shit. I love it.
