My news feed will just be a random assortment of posts that I already saw like a week ago with the occasional recent post making an appearance.

I'll have notifications but I open them and it's just notifications I already saw earlier.

Why does Facebook keep changing shit when it worked perfectly fine

if you add /?sk=h_chr to the url (especially in your bookmark), it forces chronological sorting. it still isn't perfect, but you'll see real posts way more often.

Any way to make the smartphone app do this? Worked great on my laptop.

i don't think so. they've been trying to kill chronological for years, so I doubt it'll be a setting.
