Because goldfish make a lot of waste and many people put them in small tanks they often don't last long. Goldfish are not an easy fish to take care of like say...a betta for example but they are just as hardy as bettas IMO. I used to be a parole officer and had a guy that went back to his home after a 5 year stint in prison. The home was unoccupied the entire time and when he went back the bettas and goldfish were still alive in his small outdoor above ground man made pond.
