Greetings, and welcome to the results and bracket/contest discussion topic (Editor's note: This is a voting topic, not the results/discussion topic? But this phrase has been in all of these topics so far and I guess nobody's noticed yet so I'm just gonna keep it in there.) for Best OST Contest 5! In this contest, you and fellow video game soundtrack lovers will come together to once and for all answer the question "What is the best video game soundtrack? (For now.)" Also hey it's me GameBop; deogenerate / banshiryuu has no internet at the moment so I figured I'll take some initiative to fill in & post the topic a little over an hour late whoops but hey better late than never. My apologies for the match tonight going up so late! Had a very weird night and expected at least to be able to post from my phone, but that did not happen so whoops. This match will still go on for 24 hours, and tomorrow's match will still go up at 10pm EST so there'll be a time with two matches going on simultaneously technically.

Is it weird that this Charger Insertion song feels kinda like a Mario song to me? From one of those weird music areas. Maybe the challenge areas in Sunshine...? Triple Deluxe song feels pretty average Kirby. Actually pretty close.

Cirropod is alright. Desperado is great! Reminds me of the type of Pokemon music that I like (stuff like Battle Zinnia or whatever). Like it a lot more than any other Dodonpachi music I've heard.

I appreciate that Battle is fairly short. Feels less repetitive than other Rhythm Thief tracks. Greenpath is great. I think it might've been my favorite HK area music? This match is pretty tough.

The synth sounds in Charge Cycles remind me of something very specific, but I can't remember what exactly. I like the part near the end of the loop where the sound gets especially distorted for a little bit. Beautiful Prison has a lot of stuff that I do like in Kirby music, but it feels like it's missing something. It has all this buildup, and then it doesn't pay off. Still, good match.

Oh no, two of my nominations are facing against each other! It's made even worse by the fact that I specifically requested for Desperado to be in the DoDonPachi setlist for BOST5, as it is my favorite track from the game. Gotta say, I really love those drums in cirropod though. Both of these go hard.

I feel like most of the other Rhythm Thief tracks I've heard from VGMC or VGMGG would be able to take this match, but I'm not really feeling it for BCD. Greenpath sounds like soothing RuneScape 3 music, a good song to adventure to.

Charge Cycles - Charger Insertion: 7.5. One of my favorite Charge Cycles songs (maybe my favorite?). In addition to the fun glitchiness, it's got a really great energy. This is some sort of robot discotheque. I also really like the brief minimalist parts.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe - Beautiful Prison: 4. I just can't get into instrumental Kirby music. Would I like this more if it were chiptune? Maybe. I don't know. Not really my thing.

Theresa - cirropod: 6. I supported Theresa but I don't remember this particular song. It's neat, but it doesn't stick out to me that much. I do like some of the nifty metery wonktastic stuff but the specific composition doesn't really appeal to me. But then I listened to it a few more times and bumped it up from a 5 to a 6.

DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Black Label - Desperado (Final Boss): 4.5. This is another setlist I supported despite a few weak spots. I don't remember this song either - I was expecting a seizure song. This is...fine. I typically prefer songs with melodies but I'm open to songs without, but this doesn't come together for me all that well. Which is a shame, because there's a number of songs from this setlist I'd vote for here.

Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure - Battle! Chevalier Diabolique: 5.5. I really like how this starts. Then it pulls a Hat in Time and totally changes, and I like this new segment less. If this was more of the first, shorter part, I'd like it considerably more.

Hollow Knight - Greenpath: 9. This is really really cool, wow. Love the atmosphere and the aura and the KI BURSTS of flowing energy. Feels like I'm wandering through clouds on a lake with a raft made of pollen. I love the last section when the strings start frantically plucking away. All of a sudden there are rapids. And a waterfall. And we're floating.

Charger Insertion -- This feels easy enough, Cute Prison has some neat rhythms but I'm Very Much all about just how fun & weird ChargerSong is. Doesn't help that Pretty Prison's instrumentation is too orchestral for my tastes

cirropod -- This match is much harder for me. I really love the assortment of interesting sounds of the synths and really every sound basically in cirropod, and for a mysterious cavern type of song I feel like it does it's job well. Desperado doesn't have quite as amazing sounds, but it still does have good synth sounds, and also some real fun, grand energy pulsing through it that I can really get behind. Really this is quite a tricky decision for me and so I've listened to both songs a ton to decide (fortunately I love both of these songs so repeatedly listening is enjoyable!)
Desperado, well I don't like the vocals at the start but fortunately it's only a tiny, altered bit at the very start, not even a part of the main loop. The strong synth focused bit at :48, especially the way it turns & ends at 1:05 is something I love. The small part directly after feels a bit weak to me though, but the rest of the main loop is still pretty great too. cirropod is much calmer, but as I said I love all the sounds. Personally I love the way at :11 the drums go from nonexistent to just playing with no fade in or whatever, they're just There and they're cool about it. The whole minor key this song is is a really great minor key for me, my type of key. The song's maybe a bit repetitive, but honestly it kind of works. The middle is a touch weak from that though, but as it gets to 1:44 it's another section I really love, not sure if I can explain why really, it's like maybe perhaps the big bass synth that's remained fairly constant through the song up until that point gets a bit more "concerned," and the higher synths join in as well. As I said, this is a really tough decision for me, but after listening to them repeatedly a bunch, the more I listen to cirropod I seem to like it more, while Desperado I seem to like it less. Dunno exactly how that works but cirropod's getting my vote. Still, I love both of these songs. Pains me that this is a Round 1 match. Honestly even with how dismissive of the Kirby song, this 4-pack is way too strong and it's gonna be a gosh dang shame one of them's getting eliminated early in the losers bracket next rotation

Battle! Chevalier Diabolique -- okay back to Fairly easy here, the Green Path is too peaceful/natural in a way that's only barely appealing to me, whereas this Battle is real fun and energizing.

Man, today's main bracket matches sucked. I respect what Greenpath is doing, but I'm just not a fan. In spite of that, it's still somehow the second best song of the day. I know all these soundtracks have better to offer. (Except maybe Theresa, which I don't know at all.) However, today's playlist was an amalgam of hot garbage, as far as contest listenability goes.

What can I say other than this song makes me really, really happy? With timesigs that are all over the place and a crazy-catchy hook, "Charger Insertion" is AWESOME! I was so happy when I saw this song was up today because it is one of my favorites on the Charge Cycles OST. I can honestly imagine something animated to this song because it feels alive and, at some times, like it has a mind of its own. Everything about "Charger Insertion" is fun, inventive and completely original. The atmosphere of the piece changes several times, progressing from chaotic to tranquil, back to chaotic, and to somewhat methodical with a hint of disarray. The song felt like it was telling a story, which is something I really appreciate when listening to music. I'm happy to cast a vote for my favorite BOST nom-- Kirby Triple Deluxe is good, but this song is on a different level.

An absolutely wild song-- I loved every second of it! This piece kinda spoke out to me, as I've been experimenting with tracker music lately. It's absolutely incredible to see what one of these programs is capable of and, not to mention, this song was fantastic. Atmospheric and driving, "cirropod" is definitely a song I'll revisit in the future.

Hollow Knight - Greenpath
"Greenpath" is very special to me. Not only is it my favorite area in Hollow Knight, but it also contains my favorite enemy (Mosscreep!!!). The music itself is beautiful and makes me feel so introspective and alive. I've used this track as background noise for a late night talk with a special someone and it just fills me with joy every time I hear it.

This was a fantastic day for the contest and I even have a lot of respect for the things I voted against. Let's start from the bottom and work our way up:

At present, I have very little time to sit down and actually play a video game, which makes my sessions with Hollow Knight (the only game I've played in the last two months) all the more meaningful. Greenpath immediately stands out in my mind--both the music and the environment itself. There's a horribly melancholy cast over even the most conventionally beautiful things in the world of Hallownest, as it falls further and further to an infection that rewrites the minds and bodies of its inhabitants. I find myself returning to Greenpath above all else, mostly to reflect on my real-world situations, fears, responsibilities, so forth etcetera. I think about how absolutely titanic the challenges in my life appear to be, and the looming anxiety that I don't have the strength or skill set necessary to approach them with confidence. You'll never really know what you're capable of until you stop hiding and charge into the unknown ahead. The bench might be cozy, but you can't stay there forever.
...Maybe that got a little away from me. I'm still glad that I said it.

ZZZV, from what I've heard through the contest and in personal exploration, has an enigmatic and completely original understanding of their art. I have to wonder what kinds of emotions you'd feel, or what kinds of experiences you'd have, to create an escape from the world as-is and mold it into the form of cirropod. 'Alien' is a word that is associated with ZZZV-- I disagree. I feel like I've been here before. And while I can't place it now, it'll eventually explode into memory, with every intimate detail in its right place. Some day, maybe.

I wish I had more to say about Charger Insertion. I wish I could UNDERSTAND Charger Insertion. But maybe it's better that I don't, and just keep myself in this place of absolute awe and inspiration. Thank you.
