This happen approximately 2 months ago. A friend of mine told me he was going to spend one night at a hotel, because he was going to drive for a long time and didn't want to do an all nighter driving.

He was going to make a reservation using booking. I told him that he could use my link and that way he would get a discount and I would get a reward, so both of us would benefit.

He then proceeds to ask me how does that work and I told him it was very simple, as I would get a benefit for promoting booking to a friend and he would get a discount for using that link as well. It's a very smart move by booking, as it helps them get more costumers and keeping them.

He then told me that he would rather create a fake account and use his link of his fake account for himself and that way he would get more money (he would get 12$ more than if he used my link).

I just laughed and facepalmed myself.

And keep in mind that he doesn't even have financial struggles (far from that).

If he saved more money his way, then I'd think he's a smart cookie. He's under no obligation to use your link, especially if a different method benefits him more.

Let's scam the system just to save a few bucks. . .And, if he gets caught, booking will take that option away and no one benefits anymore.

It's a little silly, but not completely unreasonable. Plus, technically speaking, it's not like you were using the system as it was intended either. Referral programs are designed to attract new business rather than just give money away when somebody is going to use the business anyway.

If I was in his shoes I would've used my friend's link, because he didn't even know that there was such a thing before I tell him.

But that's just me, I think he comes across looking a bit silly in my opinion.

And now you'll never tell your friend of any way to save money ever again. Heck you might just go and find ways for your friend to spend more money on something then they need to.
