That's like, almost exactly the same as in the game.

Turns out someone from the band also did the track for Ice Cap in Sonic 3. Seems like they could have deviated just a bit, though.

Hm. Sonic is one thing, but I'm not sure how I feel about the most iconic game of the most iconic game series ever being directly inspired by other artists.

The older you get, the more you realize that everyone was inspired by something. Usually multiple things. Literally every movie, book, band, video game, and so on. Some creators make this more obvious than others.

George Lucas made Star Wars because was inspired by old Buck Rodgers specials. Toby Fox's Undertale was inspired by Earthbound. Pretty much all sci-fi was inspired by Frankenstein in one way or another. Avenged Sevenfold was inspired by Metallica. It goes on, and on and on.

Nothing is truly original. And that's ok. What's most important about the things we enjoy is not where they came from, but how well their creators did with what they were given, and the emotions and memories we gained as a result.

Once we've been thoroughly inspired, then it becomes our turn to give back to the world. It's a beautiful cycle of creativity.

Flash Gordon, not Buck Rogers. Though to be fair, Flash Gordon only exists because it was created as a direct and deliberate rip-off of Buck Rogers.

Though in the case of Star Wars, it's even worse than that. Huge chunks of A New Hope's plot are copied straight over from Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, and a number of the X-Wing scenes towards the end were almost identical to dogfighting scenes from a WWII fighter movie Lucas watched for reference.

this seems to be pretty common in japan, where I guess they'd have no concept of copyright if it wasn't for USA. IIRC they had to completely rewrite the Lemmings soundtrack because it was at first all blatantly plagiarized, which is why it's instead all blatantly copied from stuff that's public domain instead. (list here apparently: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=1933.0 )

^ Not sure why you brought up Lemmings immediately after talking about Japan. Lemmings was developed in Scotland, not Japan.

thanks, I did think Lemmings was Japanese since it was published by Sunsoft on Nintendo and Sega consoles. as someone else mentioned, it probably has more to do with the era than the location. I just had more known examples of it from Japan, except my main one turns out not even to be from there.

Yeah, it was a wild west back then.
The original Duke Nukem got graphics copied from that Megaman PC game (crates, nuclear barrels, background bricks) and multiple background assets and the flamethrower attack were copied from Turrican.
Jumpman was a game inspired by Donkey Kong. Which got a sequel called Jumpman Jr. Nothing wrong with that, but Apogee released a port called Jumpman Lives 8 years later, with all Jumpman and Jumpman Jr levels and some more, without having the right from the license owner, so they had to stop selling it.
That said, we have always had shameless ripoffs.
Fighters History VS Street Fighter 2, Pong VS Magnavox Odyssey's table tennis, The Great Giana Sisters VS Super Mario Bros, Golden Axe Warrior VS Legend of Zelda, Limbo of the Lost... stole everything from multiple bigname games..., Another Bound VS Metroid Prime, Final Combat VS Team Fortress 2, DuLuDubi Star VS Super Mario Galaxy, Sepia Go VS Splatoon, BoxMaker VS Super Mario Maker, etc etc.
