First hurdle

https://tinyurl.com/yypfad7u

A bill to allow transgender and gender diverse people to change the sex listed on their birth certificate without surgery has cleared its first hurdle, passing the Victorian legislative assembly on Thursday.

The equality minister, Martin Foley, said the legislation was an opportunity for trans and gender diverse people to have their true self reflected on their birth certificate.

It would make life less humiliating, difficult, and impractical for people, he said.

Personally I dont think its necessary to change your birth certificate ever but more power to those who feel its necessary

Your birth certificate is like the one place where it should be impossible to change your sex. Doctors need to know this shit when you show up at the ER.

It's gotta be somewhere doctors can access. Or you get stories like this.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2019/05/16/pregnant-transgender-man-births-stillborn-baby-hospital-missed-labor-signs/3692201002/

I figured a birth certificate is something doctors would have access to. If I'm wrong on that then I retract my statement.

Edit: to clarify that's the digital records of the physical certificate. The alternative would be having your birth sex on your personal identification or something a person is likely to have physically on them.

I feel it's important that official documents should have some reference to their birth sex even if it's not outright stated in plain English. It's unimportant for day to day life, but I'm sure there are some areas in which it's important. It's perfectly fine to embrace their identified gender, but it shouldn't completely erase their former status either.

Good. Your doctor isn't going to look at your birth certificate. If they're a good doctor, they'll see in your chart that you're transgender or listen when you tell them and act accordingly.

So we cant say only men have prostates because 0.05% of the population is born intersex?

This is dumb.

Medical professionals need to know the sex at birth to properly diagnosis certain medical conditions. If you tell them a lie, which what it is, you're begging for misdiagnosis.

In the 2015 Meaningful Use certification, electronic medical records support sex, gender identity and Sexual orientation. That's what physicians need, especially the sex assigned at birth.

The sex assigned at birth should never change because it's a source of truth. Making it easy to change will mostly benefit people who want to prey on women.

They are which does make this situation in particular a little odd.

Why? Birth certificate is a legal document, not a medical one.

I'd be willing to bet the focus on birth certificates is more to do with the ripple effects and not the practical differences between gender vs sex. For example, if you change your sex on your birth certificate, you theoretically automatically get to change your sex on your driver's license in any state because it's supposed to match your birth certificate.

EDIT: and for playing the langauge game. Having it on your BC reinforces the "I was ALWAYS this gender" over "I transitioned to this gender" which can be important in looking at treatment.

For medical as well as legal purposes. The same reason that most states refuse to alter a birth certificate to reflect a name change.
