Hopefully they start developing games on a new engine.
All their games were constantly dropping frames and the graphics were kinda crap(compared to other modern games).

Yeah even back on the 360/PS3 their engine was really stuttery and showing its age

I thought that for their most recent games they did have a new engine?

Will they bring back the old writers?

Article says theyre bringing in some of the old staff for freelance positions and may keep them on permanently in the future

Im sure that depends on how profitable future titles end up being

I would hope that they bring at least some back. Makes sense since those people wrote the stories and probably know what the plans for them were...

So does this mean more Game of Thrones seasons then? I know it was not the greatest little series, but it was fun enough and ended on a cliffhanger of sorts. I would like to see where it goes if nothing else~

So basically everyone got fired, lost their insurance and any accumulated time off, and now they're being "rehired" as "freelancers" with no insurance and no time off.

Telltale...

They made Walking Dead and Batman episodic games right? I love those. Thought it was over with the closure because of poor management, but now I can dream of a Batman season 3.

It's more like they're being hired by a new company that cut the face off the corpse of the old company and is now wearing it and going "Hello, I am your old friend! Let us renew our perfectly remembered acquaintance."

It's basically what happened with THQ Nordic and Atari. Those companies today have no direct connection to the companies that originally had those names.

Sometimes, that kind of shift can be a positive (THQ Nordic bought up a LOT of old IPs that were pretty much dead, and has put out some good games, and may revive others), but it can also be negative (Atari mostly just churned out shit games and hid behind the recognizable brand name to profit from a name everyone recognized and lots of people had love for, but which wasn't the same thing at all, and was mostly just attached to a shit publisher).

Hopefully they start making games where your choices actually matter.

In some ways it can actually be more beneficial to the employees, as they can demand way more pay that more then makes up for the no insurance and no time off. I have known plenty of people who do that (my current situation was essentially that when I got fired, AND they had to pay me 6 months of severance so I got 2 paychecks instead of one).

All depends on how you negotiate your contract.

They're never going to matter THAT much, because you're never going to have a dozen radically different endings to any game in the modern era. It would require so much development time (and thus money), no studio would ever do it.

At best, you can hope for the "journey" to differ even if the "destination" doesn't. How you get from Point A to Point B can tell a relatively different story even if you're still going to Point B regardless, and can't just leap directly to Point Q.

That being said, I thought they handled things well in Tales from the Borderlands. I played it and then watched my nephew play it, and there was a lot in the middle that was blatantly different, because we made one major choice differently. And even in cases where the same thing happened, it was somewhat recontextualized by previous choices.

I admit the Batman game felt kind of railroady at times, as did the Game of Thrones story, but it felt like maybe they were a bit too constrained by the existing settings/characterization with those, and the company was already started to crank under the pressure of making too many games.

The Minecraft games were surprisingly better than they had any right to be, though the second season wasn't really as strong as the first, because it felt like they really didn't have a good idea of where they wanted to go with the narrative.
