They are filled with ink which will get all over everything if you try to forcefully remove them, and speaking from experience, it seems like stores can't remove the tags from other stores.

You could have just stopped when the alarm went off when you left the store. Also, they aren't all filled with ink it depends on the type of tag.

Most tags now are magnetic and just set off alarms, and they're deactivated at the checkout. Deactivating tags but forgetting to take them off isn't a super rare thing.

I've made it home with a tag still on before, never set off an alarm. It was a close place though so I just went back.

The ink ones usually not

At one time there were tags that were both magnetic and had the ink, but they weren't popular because they were expensive.

The magnetic tags are super cheap so most stores moved over to those
